I felt like I needed to make a post regarding breweries releasing seasonal IPAs and the freshness of the hop profile. What if somebody picks up a Lagunitas Sucks in late March/ April, which means they wouldn't be getting the full body of the beer as the brewer intended, and maybe not decide to grab a beer from them again. If they could, for example, brew it year round, they could ensure markets receive fresh batches of it.

    Just thrown it out there.

If that is your way of saying Lagunitas should brew Sucks year round then I am with ya man!

LS should be brewed year round as well as Ruthless Rye from SN. I agree with what you're saying but c'mon, a sensible person shouldn't be picking up an IPA that they never had before that old and judging the whole brewery by that one brew. When fresh, Sucks was damn good. Old, I'm sure its 'good' but not what the brewer intended, like you said.

Brewing it year round might also saturate the shelves and leave some stores and markets with beer sitting on the shelves rotting. I wish more hoppy beers were limited and seasonal, if you know when its coming you will have plenty of time to get it fresh.

It's all true. I just had a sucks more recently and it was far inferior to when I had it fresh the first week of December. And boy was it an experience.

But then I went and picked up some Torpedo and was thinking "hmmm, this is much more malty than I remember". And then I realized that it was 5 months old.

Also, Ruthless should be brewed year round. I'm guessing by Q1 of 2014, it will be year old and they will have a new spring seasonal.

Seasonal IPAs are the best damn thing ever imo. You know what season they are released in and you get them asap. Nothing better than a fresh IPA you haven't had the opportunity to drink for nearly a year! Celebration being released is like the coolest thing ever or a fresh hop IPA. Its great knowing you are getting a super fresh IPA because you know what season a beer is released in. I honestly think most, if not all, IPAs should be released on a seasonal basis.

Ya, you bring a good point. I love the waiting or Anchor Christmas and Celebration. Very valid.

If a beer didn't sell out as a seasonal and is on the shelf past its pull date, how is making it year-'round going to help? It would still be on the shelf and the retailer would have no reason to order more of a "fresh batch". It's up to the distributor to pull old stock, regardless of whether it's a seasonal or available all the time.

This year I'm gonna buy a few cases of Founders Harvest when it comes out. Same with Sucks (If they make it again).

I love Founders Harvest, best fresh hop beer out there. That being said, I only wish we could find cases of the stuff around here, it's extremely limited in these parts.

I find seasonal IPAs tend to be fresher more of the time than year rounds. At least until the end of the run then some sits for a while. I'd like to see more seasonal IPAs myself.

youre assuming that year-rounds sell. I was a dumbass and grabbed a six pack of GI Honker's Ale. Got a mile down the road and checked the date. 4/2/09. If its like Two-Hearted and never sits longer than a month, then fine. But I have seen Two-Hearted over two months old. It would need to be somewhere where it is guaranteed to sell without sitting, which hard to do.

I like the thought tho. To those who know, being a seasonal IPA helps with freshness. Like you said, I know that Sucks is long gone. If I see it on a shelf, I know its way past old. But maybe they could release year round!

You just made my point that just because its brewed year round, doesn't mean its going to be fresh on the shelves of beer stores. IMO, if its seasonal, even if its not dated, you have some idea how old it is.

I would like to see more seasonal IPA's and pale ales.

Sucks was a damn good IPA! Would love to see that year round. I was lucky enough to get Burton Baton year round! Now I need Cigar City White Oak Jai Alai year round and Sucks too.

On second thought maybe not because I'd spend all my money on them and live on the streets drinking great beer!

I think the main idea behind releasing seasonal IPA's is that some hops are only available 'fresh' as certain times of the year. For example: Sierra Nevada is known for their seasonal IPA’s such as the Northern and Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ales, and their Hoptimum, etc…

Keep in mind that DFH is now only 'flavoring' the Burton Baton with oak staves in lieu of ageing it in their oak tanks. Probably a consequence of making it year-round. It's just not the same anymore to me.
