Everybody has a different palate. I also don't personally perceive grapefruit but lots of folks do. My wife describes Bells Two Hearted and my homebrewed all Centennial hopped IPA as being grapefruity. I personally just describe it with a more generic term of citrusy.

    Cheers!

I agree, that's what makes these recommendation threads so difficult, though I find them to be quite informative at times as well.

I disagree. I think the strong malt bill made this a very balanced IPA and the grapefruit hardly shines through.

There are a few things imho that will change the flavor..... It seems to me that Two Hearted Ale uses more Malt then Centennial. I absolutely love Centennial but don't care much for Two Hearted. I'm a hop head and prefer a Hop dominant beer with very little Malt.

So if the Malt is lighter then the Hop's will stand out more. Also; I would think that how much hop is used in the dry hopping process would also effect the overall Hop Flavor profile.

All in all...... I personally prefer beers that taste like the Hop God's themselves just squeezed the hell out of some fresh hops into a pint glass. Oh yeah and then added a tiny bit of malt to balance it out. Don't get me wrong I do like malt.... not only do I like the Hop Flavor but I also like a Sweet beer. A beer that has some yummy crystallized sweetness is divine, hence the need for malt.

So far, my favorite beer is Hop Stoopid... it has tons of fresh hop taste backed up with that yummy crystallized sweetness. Very good beer imho.

Just opened up another can of Green Flash West Coast IPA. It's pretty good.

Well, this is a bit confusing.

BA tectactoe posted (see above): “For example, Centennial IPA by Founders is fantastic fresh, but the hop profile drops off relatively quickly (noticeably at 3-4 weeks) and after about 6-8 weeks it becomes somewhat of a malty mess.”

My personal experience with Founder’s Centennial IPA is that it is too malty.

Now you report something that is 180° out of sync: “It seems to me that Two Hearted Ale uses more Malt then Centennial.” I personally have never had a Two Hearted Ale that was more malty than Founder’s Centennial IPA; the majority of my experiences with Centennial IPA is that it was a “malty mess” (to quote tectactoe).

    Weird!

Just to be fair, I will say that Founder's Centennial does have a good Malt presence. I also agree that the fresher it is the more "fresh hop taste" you get... while the older it is... the more it becomes more like an English Ale where the Malt starts to take center stage.

I have to correct myself a little; I personally find that Two Hearted Ale has a More "Roasted Malt" profile. So this to me makes it a more Malty focused ale.

If you don't pick up on the predominate malt flavor of Two Hearted, then this Would be the classic example of the subjective differences of peoples palates.

I do love Centennial Hops and Founder's Centennial, for me really hits me with a strong Centennial Hop profile. Where as Two Hearted doesn't

But at the end of the day... Two Hearted gets tons of high reviews.... so you can't argue with that!

    BTW -

I'm halfway through my 1pt. 6oz. Green Flash West Coast IPA and I have to say that even though it is a good Ale, it's not hitting me with grapefruit/apricot. It's a little more on the Lemon side of the hop vine. But still a good beer.

But I would have to say that I'm still gravitating to Hop Stoopid, Stone's Ruination, Ballast Point's Sculpin, Languitas Maximus and Founders Double Trouble and Centennial.

I will be looking out for that Evolution IPA though... I've seen Evolution in the store... just not the IPA... being it's from Maryland though... I would think that I could get it somewhere in the Hampton Roads area.

Evolution Lot No. 6 is a badass citrusy DIPA (wish I could get it out here.) Also seek out Sculpin, Union Jack, Double Jack, any Lagunitas IPA (pretty much,) Green Flash Hop Head Red & West Coast IPA, and New Belgium Rampant. I found all of those to be pretty citrusy/tropical fruity and not too far on the piney side.

Try the Palate Wrecker. I love West Coast IPA by Green Flash, but if you're going for grapefruit profile, I think Palate Wrecker has it in spades.

Wasn't Palate Wrecker released in February? I know it flew off the shelves here (if you could even find it) and I thought it was a limited release.. I could be wrong about both of those things, but if I'm correct and you've had it recently, how's it holding up?

I totally agree, Union Jack for me is a huge smack in the face with the "Grapefruit" hopiness flavor profile.

The last time I had it was at a local Alamo Drafthouse about a week and a half ago. Being in a theater, I wasn't able to check for a bottling or freshness date.

It seemed to hold up pretty well. The grapefruit and citrus rind was still present, though maybe a little subdued from when I first had it back in February.

As far as I know, it's a rotating, but not limited, release. So it should be back around the beginning of 2014. But don't quote me on that.

Came here to post the same thing. I taste no grapefruit in Two Hearted. I get lots of floral/fruity notes though.

If you can find "Crooked Tree" from Darkhorse, that's about as "grapefruity" an IPA as I've tasted.
