‘tis that time again! After scrambling around and trying to find dates that worked out – my wife and I will be heading back to Munich (and Bamberg) the first week of August.
Since we won’t have all that long (8/2 - 8/8), we’ll probably be pretty busy!

We hope to hit spots like Kloster Andechs, Leibhard’s in Aying, Weihenstephan in Freising, Forschungsbrauerei, as well as the fun halls in and around central Munich. We’ll also be in Bamberg 8/4 and 8/5 – hopefully hitting as many breweries as possible both days! Anyone want to meet up or tag along for a beer or two?

Also, we *might* have room in our luggage to bring an American beer or two if anyone is fiending for anything unusual from the States.

I just found out I'm heading to Munich for work and will arrive Saturday June 8 and staying for a week. Any recommendations for a BA visiting Munich for the first time? I speak a little bit of German so I should be able to get around OK (took classes in high school and college), I just have no idea where to go because I've never been to Germany. Probably the people I'm working with will take me out at least one night but will have a few nights on my own probably. Thanks in advance...

A week in Munich is a blast...and it'll be plenty of time to hit most of my favorite spots.
Personally, I think Kloster Andechs is my "must hit" #1 destination, although if you've never been I'd put the Hofbrauhaus as the place you should go first. The beer is still top notch, and it's a good way to get accustomed to how bierhalls work. Eat somewhere else, but definitely grad some liters at the Hof.
If the weather is warm, biergartens are a great way to relax and enjoy life. There are 4 of them within the Englischer Garten, so that's a good place to start. Augustiner Keller might be my overall favorite of the easily reachable ones, though.

Actually...why should I bother even going too crazy when someone else has already done it for me? You should just order this (overnight it since it's short notice):

Read in on the plane and you'll be good to go.

In addition to everything Domingo said earlier, if it's a nice day the English Garden and the Viktualienmarkt would be ideal destinations. Otherwise, there are a few threads here in the German forum that have good Munich and Munich-area recommendations. Give 'em a look, and have fun!

Domingo: Where are you staying in Bamberg? Any plans to venture outside of town? If you're in a Ferienwohnung, any interest in pre-ordering a few crates from the country breweries to greet you upon your arrival?

Kind of a funny story - we're going to be at the Best Western. It's right by Spezial and Faessla and we were able to get a decent combo deal on it. I did have a room at Spezial booked, but a friend mentioned that he brought back begbugs from a trip that included Spezial (among 2 other hotels). That didn't sound very appealing, especially to my wife, so we went with a heartless chain that bleaches their sheets everyday :stuck_out_tongue:
I'm not sure we'll have time to go very far since we only have 2 days. The plan is to hit up Greifenklau, Klosterbrau, Kaiserdom, & Ambrausianum on Sunday. We're visiting all of the others on Monday and hopefully squeezing in a trip to Cafe Abseits and Der Pelikan at some point either day.

That's as bad as me staying at the Holiday Inn in Dublin -- but it was marathon week and the only available rooms!

On the other hand, location is everything and we were well within walking distance of good pubs.

Sure wish I could remember the hotel I stayed at in Bamberg -- it was very nice and, IIRC, we walked to it from the Banhoff (hell, we walked to it from everywhere in Bamberg!).

I don't know. I had one of my best ever visits to Munich when we stayed at the Marriott; easily accessible, clean and well-appointed (indoor pool, etc.), and, above all, a steal on Priceline at $60 per night in the dead of summer. Plus it was a five-minute walk from the U-Bahn line that went straight through Schwabing (including the Gisela Strasse stop that leads to the Chinesicher Turm Biergarten) and on to the Hauptbahnhof (with its short distance to Augustinerkeller).

The Best Western in Bamberg is very nice as well. Should be a great stay. You'll be close to Mahr's as well...and to the new underpass at the Bahnhof over to Poedeldorferstrasse and Abseits. Also on 8/5 are the Kirchweih fests in Strullendorf, Poedeldorf, and Stegaurach. Should be a blast either way.

In Munich we've really enjoyed the Hilton Munich City. There's an S-bahn station right in the basement, an Aldi and Mueller (bakery) connected to it, and it's a quick walk from the main Marienplatz area. It's also right beside the Gasteig and a 5 minute walk from the Deutsches Museum.
Once you know your way around, it's a great spot to be in - especially if you like to walk. There's a greenbelt a block away that will carry you all the way to the Englischer Garten right by the Isar. It's really picturesque and at times it's hard to believe you're right in the middle of a pretty large city.

By the pictures, that may be where I stayed as well -- the street views look storybook.

    Definitely all about the location.

On our first trip to Oktoberfest (1990?) this is where the in-tourist center set us up as last-minute accommodations: http://www.hotel-amba.de/EN/Home.aspx (http://www.hotel-amba.de/EN/MapsandDirections.aspx)

Talk about location! Wasn't the fanciest hotel, but it had a nice little bar (at the time) and was where I had the .25 liter of H-P Weizen fom Vaß. The in-tourist asked if we wanted fancy, but far from the Fest, or comfortable and walking distance to the fest. We like comfortable! My friends and I used it regularly for the next few years.

That Aldi is one of our first stops each time we've been over there. Typically just to grab 2 of those big 2L bottles of water and a 1L of "Vitamin Juice" to stay hydrated.

    That's pretty central!

On my most recent trip, I tried to book the Marriott, but it was full. Ended up here: http://www.maritim.com/en/hotels/germany/hotel-muenchen

Right across from the Hauptbahnhof as well, and for $65/night (with a rooftop pool) we couldn't complain...even if there was a strip club right next door! Still, stumbling distance from the Augustinerkeller, and well-positioned for the fest(s) at the Theresienwiese.

Same here. Easy to walk to everything. Although the next time we're staying in a place that's not's part of a chain.

Stayed here in Bamberg: http://www.wolff-bamberg.de/. For 65 Euro a night you are right on the river, across from the Wasserschloss Concordia (top right)...and now this, which takes you to stairs leading directly up to Spezialkeller:

We stayed at Faessla on our last trip and actually tried to book them again for this trip, but they were booked up this time. I thought it was pretty neat having a key to a brewery, and the staff was great. Plus, it's conveniently located. It was also amusing to see all of the "all day" drinkers there when we'd leave in the morning and still there when we'd come back at night. No place else seemed have those guys.
I think that the only knock on the place is that the towels were tiny. I felt like I was drying off with a washcloth.
Still, I'd recommend it to anyone, especially if you bring your own towels :stuck_out_tongue:
Bamberg doesn't seem to have any shortage of good places to stay, so hopefully the Best Western will treat us right. The prices were good, the location was right, and the rooms looked pretty nice online.
