Today is the funeral of BA's own Reluctant Scooper Simon Johnson,a legend among the UK (and world) beer and social media scene. Anyone who was fortunate enough to have met Simon will attest to his generosity, knowledge, enthusiasm, humility and wicked sense of humor as he truly was THE poster boy for all that is best in beer advocacy. Tragically, he taken well before his time.

As a mark of respect I ask that if any BA is planning to drink beer today that they make it a bottle of Orval as it really was Simon's favourite. It would be a touching tribute to this gentleman who's like we will not see again.

    Thank you.

Expect the bottle being popped open and given a proper pour into a Duvel tulip in almost exactly 12 hours from now.

This is my first time hearing about Simon but he sounds like a great guy!

I will drink one of my Orval clone beers (did Simon appreciate homebrewing?) in my Gulden Draak Tulip glass and say “Cheers!”

Simon refused to home brew. I believe he felt he couldn't do it justice. But I have no doubt he would have savored a home brew Orval clone. No doubt.

Still gutted about this, and wish I could have met him in person. I'll try to find an Orval for this evening.

I'll buy an orval tonight and drink it in his honor. We have 18 gallons of orval clone in fermenters , we'll remember him when drinking that too.

I never need a reason to open an Orval, and this sounds like a better reason than most. Cheers!

The thread title sounds like a happy story about a dog and his owner going to the park.

Bummer. Sorry to read the bad news. RIP

I'm on Dad's taxi detail (again) tonight which means I will be cracking mine open later. I will be keeping up with the thread in the meantime though.

Thanks. A trawl through the internet or twitter today should give people some idea of Simon's (Reluctant Scooper) take on the beer world and people's thoughts about him and his passing. Absolutely hilarious guy who had time for everyone and loved good beer no matter where it came from or how it was dispensed.

I'll try to find and buy an orval tonight and drink it in his honor.

Orval is a quite difficult beer to find in my country, but it worth the try!

Sounds like he and i had something in common.
I went on a trip to Belgium recently. I visited Cantillon, drank Westy 12, 3F Golden Blend, and many others. Still the best beer i had might be the aged Orval served at cellar temp.

Condolences to you and the UK group, Zimbo. I can't get Orval on short notice here in Germany so instead I'll share a story that Danny1217's post just reminded me of...

In January 2012 my wife and I went to Brussels for the first time as an anniversary gift to ourselves. We were only there for a weekend and had as many different beers as we could at as many different places as we could manage with our newborn. My favorite to this day is the Orval I had when I snuck down to the hotel bar while my wife was putting our son to sleep. Just a classic beer, beautifully presented in its chalice. One of my favorites.
