Read the comment directly above mine (#15). Feel that painful sensation right behind your eyeballs? Yep, that's your brain doing it's thing.

But seriously though, Oakland would be way cooler if it weren't for all that violent crime and the 25% increase in homicides from 2011 to 2012. Beer Rev is cool, but not cool enough for me to take a bullet just to grab a pint.

I work very close to BR and have never felt unsafe. Including leaving from there late. Hope this helps.

I just wish it were closer to BART. One reason I wind up at the Trappist more often. The other is the bathroom situation.

I've had some interesting encounters the two times I've walked from BR to BART. Normally that stuff doesn't bother me much, it's just an issue when my fiancee is around. Not really any worse than the fun you find downtown SF .

Personal stories aside. . . The city violent crime rate for Oakland in 2010 was higher than the national average by 278.94%

And those are the reported crimes. . .this is a city that had a parade a guy who murdered four police officers, so some of the people there might have kind of a 'chilling effect' on those who wish to report crimes compared to the national average as well.

But hey, like Bart Simpson said "we all gotta get murdered someday"

Thanks, everyone for all the helpful suggestions. Perhaps I should have mentioned that my girlfriend is as big of a beer nerd as I am and we have all of our dinner plans figured out. We're just looking for amazing local beers.

We're staying in downtown Frisco. That's what the locals call it, right?

We already have a reservation for Delfina (the restaurant, not the pizzeria) and are thinking of going to La Ciccia as well. Has anyone been to either?

I'm a huge pizza nerd. We're hitting Una Pizza Napoletana. Just Peroni's served there. Definitely not a beer-centric place. When in Rome though...

We might try to make it to Tony's Pizzeria Napoletano for lunch one day. I've head good things about Delfina Pizzeria and Pizzaiolo in Oakland and well.

Good choice on the pizza, make sure it's open and he's not on vacation or anything, he kind of keeps his own schedule sometimes. Get a car and go to the North Bay to hit russian river and Lagunitas if at all possible. Bart doesn't make it to the North Bay and I don't think the bus situation is very good, but you may want to look into that if you can't get a car. This would also give you the option to wine taste unless you are totally against wine and dead set on beer.

I've never been to Delfina, but based on many, many pizzas, I can't imagine the food is less than stellar.

I have had a lot more misses at Delfina, than hits. The pizzeria is great, and I go there as much as UPN or Tony's.

On the pizza topic, has anyone else noticed A16's consistency drop off in the last year? It was so good back around 05 and held steady for a long time, but the past few times Ive gone the crust has been all over the place.

If you are going to the East Bay, I like Pizzaiolo(/Boot & Shoe Service) better than any of the SF heavy-hitters. But the real gem---albeit in a different style---for me is in Berkeley: Emilia's. If you have glassware, you can bring bottles with you.
More misses at Delfina---as in Delfina the restaurant and not Pizzeria Delfina?
