Ninja brewers are like gypsy brewers except the brewery doesn't even know that the ninja brewers used their equipment. Don't ask how they manage to keep those tanks hidden during fermentation, it's an ancient ninja secret.

Speaking of Ninjas, some fresh Citra for the 4th of July would sure be nice.

You guys almost snuck a new label past me with the most recent batch of Blood of the Unicorn...almost.....

I'll have to re-evaluate my unicorn shelf with this new addition. The End of Days duo will probably be getting the boot.

BTW does anyone know what the strange flavor is in "Something Hoppy this way comes"? Is it the flavor from the hops or something added? I've never tasted anything like this in another other IPA. It's a really strange flavor, but I seem to like it. I tasted it in another one of their beers as well. Cant put my finger on it.

can't tell you what you're experiencing as you've just described it as a "strange flavour", but something hoppy is all about sorachi ace hops. maybe try something else that is known to be heavy on sorachi ace?

Yeah, that might be it. thx for the info. Don't think I've had any other sorachi ace hop beer. I know Brooklyn has one called by the same name.

jlopez - That distinct taste, tasted like old onions to me, is 100% from the Sorachi Ace hops......
That is one of the only IPA's Ive ever wanted to drainpour, it was also THE WORST pipeworks beer I've ever had.
I love pipeworks, but ever since I had that beer, I have been reluctant to try anything by them other than very highly rated beers.

I've had countless IPA/DIPA's but I find it weird I havent encountered ANY at all with Sorachi Ace hops until now. I actually somewhat enjoyed it considering it's a little different for me. I usually prefer more tropical tasting IPA's/DIPA's.

Sorachi ace I think is a hop that brewers haven't quite conquered yet. You have this one which has and overload of it and leads to that pledgy flavor and you have Thornbridge Bracia where you can't tell its there. Marilime Law also had Sorachi Ace but used more sparingly and I thought it complemented the lime well, but it was a lime beer. I'm not super offended by sorachi ace. But some people cant stand Simcoe and I love that, and some people love Summit but I hate it, it is weird how hops work.

Heard it at their event for beer week. Also, it was deemed a success and you will prob see it pop up again, my fingernails say so.

And you got to enjoy it fresh! That bottle is like 3 days old.

From the label, simcoe, centennial, and sorachi ace.

I think somewhere in this very thread one of the pipeworks dudes said sorachi ace hops are very 'polarizing' after someone asked about 'off' flavors.

First time they made& I tried 'something hoppy' last summer I thought the beer must have been old and skunked or something but eventually realized it was those sorachi hops. Now I stay away from that one as I was not a fan. I get rancid coconut flavors from them.

I noticed their presence my first sip of marilime ninja, but thought it actually worked really well with the lime. Hope they do that one again.

So excited Blood of the Unicorn is back I didn't even notice the label being a bit different!

You may deliver your unwanted Something Hoppy bottles directly to my fridge, please. Easily one of my favorites from Pipeworks and of beers with sorachi ace, too.

I'm currently drinking this beer, batch #143 and thought the same thing. I had a bottle from a previous batch a couple months ago and found it outstanding and don't recall these rancid, almost buttery notes I'm getting from this one. Don't know, maybe my palate is playing games with me but I think it tastes different. Not gonna keep me from finishing the bottle though. Pipeworks is certainly brewing some amazing stuff.

I find that pipeworks DIPAs usually have buttery notes and I like that

Drank a Marilime yesterday, batch #136 and it was really tasty. Think of it as more of a refreshing lime DIPA rather than a straight up DIPA and you'll be in the right frame of mind to drink this beer.

Does Pipeworks have a tasting room? I've got nothing to do this week and I'd love to head into the city and grab a pint or 7.
