You made a good choice. What could be wrong about being just a few houses down the street from both Faessla and Spezial? Good Doener stand on Koenigstrasse as well...for those late-night cravings!

One day during Maibock season I will have to book a room at the Altstadt Hotel Molitor, across the street from Klosterbräu. Reduce the distance needed to stumble back.

A lot of "cravings" can be satisfied on Koenigstrasse late at night.

    Steveh,

My wife, our then-13 month-old daughter and I stayed at the Amba on the last night of our OFest trip in '89.... Easily got the job done...

Domingo - jealous!!! Until, of course, I get back in Sept/Oct.... ;-)

    Prosit!!

Here's another I stayed at a couple times -- pretty close to the Maritim -- which I don't believe was open on my last trip, but I'm not sure.

If anyone remembers a long time back, there used to be a huge Bierhall right across the street from the Eder. It had to close because of licensing or failed ownership -- really can't recall, but it was great fun.

Shit! My wife-to-be and I stayed at the Eder on our first OFest trip, in '83.... Wtf!?!
    Was that Bierhall the Mathaser?

    Prosit!

Hey -- just looking at Google's satellite view of Munich and if you pan over to the Theresienwiese the shot was taken at the early stages of setting up the Oktoberfest -- pretty cool view.

Hah. Can't say I was there back then. Was it still as quaint? I seem to recall some renovation in-between trips I made.

Yeah, that could be it -- couldn't remember the name, but it was huge. Can you remember what beer they had?

Bamberg is pretty awesome. Love those rauchbiers. I'd recommend visiting Regensberg while you are there. Load up on schweinshaxe!

    http://www.munichfound.com/archives/id/84/article/1620/ Good read.

Based on other research, looks like the Mathaser was a Löwenbräu Hall.

    Crazy.

I've stayed at Spezial a dozen times or so and have never had a bedbug problem. Probably one of the other places.

BTW, they are working on the addition and 8 more rooms will be available starting (hopefully) in October/November.

While I know this is probably blasphemous to the the Franonians and Bavarians...but are Rothaus beers like Tannenzapfle readily available anywhere in Munich or Bamberg? I recall seeing Tannenzapfle on the menu at Der Pelikan, but they were out of it at the time.
After all of the raves those seem to get, I figure I might as well try them if they're around.

Restaurants I don't know, but I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find some in a grocery store or beer store.

That's good to know. I haven't spent a ton of time shopping for bottles, but at most convenience shops I only saw the bigger national brands like Konig, Bit, Beck's, etc. At the same time, I didn't really look very hard either.

Rothaus is all over the place here (if you can't find the Tannenzapfle, look for the Pils - they are the same beer). That said, I know how Germany can be sometimes, so I'll wish you good luck in your search.

There used to be a big department store on the Marienplatz (toward the east end, closer to Schneider, but not that far), 2 or 3 floors, with a gourmet grocery in the basement level. I once picked up some different beers there (some time ago) including a Berliner Weiß.

Anyone know if that's still around?

I'm in Munich right now and went to this department store this past Saturday, but I went in and went UP the escalator. I didn't even know they had a gourmet food section in the basement level. It looks from checking out the website that they do have a gourmet food section. I am going to go check it out sometime before I leave town on Sunday. Thanks for the heads up! Here is the address:

    Galeria Kaufhof Marienplatz Munich
    Kaufingerstrasse 1-5
