A Place to Report Irresponsible Bottle Shops?

Before I hear it, yes, I know I can report the shop to the brewery, which I plan to do.

But, that aside. Does anyone else feel it would be helpful to have a place here to report irresponsible bottle shops (i.e.: those who stock ridiculously out of date beers and/or completely unknowledgeable staff)?

I ask because I am quite peeved at one of my regular beer stops. I recently picked up a 4 pack of Apollo and Sweet Action from Sixpoint. The Apollo...totally righteous and fresh. The Sweet Action...has a freaking Best Before date of 11/17/2011!!!! No that is not a misprint...this beer was best by almost 2 years ago! Unfortunately, Sixpoint stamps the freshness date on the cans, and not the package, meaning I couldn't have known this before getting it home without ripping open the box.

I posted on the shop's Facebook page expressing my concern and have heard zero, zilch, nada in response. This, along with other freshness disasters I noticed while there, has resulted in my choice to go elsewhere and pay a few extra bucks to ensure quality product.

But anyway....should we have a thread/location to report such shops?

There's enough bitching on the boards. Put it in a place review.

Well, maybe they've started in the last 2 years, but I believe Sixpoint does actually stamp the little box they come in. And I mean, didn't you just report them without dropping their name?

I think the typical response on here to situations like this is to address the issue with the manager and see if things change. If they don't, tell the manager you won't be buying from them anymore and maybe start steering your friends away from them also. There's gotta be other places for you to buy beer from, right?

I don't think a Facebook page post is enough of an opportunity for them to make it right. Take the beer back to them, say you didn't notice the date until you got home, and ask for an exchange. If they won't, include that as a negative point on a place review.

A good thing about place reviews here is you can edit them over and over as the places evolve and/or change their practices.

Maybe a stupid question... but if Sixpoint stamps the cans and not the packaging, how would the bottle shop know, other than some kind of complex tracking system like marking cases as they come in?

what everybody else said, especially leedorham...

take the beer back and politely ask for a refund or exchange.

if they're a good beer store they will apologize and accomodate you, cheers!

Folks in the trading forums keep and circulate a "bad trader list." Individual BA's (such as yourself) could easily start such a list, a "bad beer store list" as it were. Like the bad trader list, a description of why they are on the list is given (that way, if you personally feel like they weren't being "bad" you can make up your own mind). Of course, composing and maintaining a list for the entire country would be nuts. Perhaps you could it for your region/state.

Sixpoint is local to me here on Long Island and as far as I can recall the outer cardboard box of the 4 pack has had a best before date stamp for at least a year.
I would think if there was a 4 pack sitting on the shelf with no date code in 2013, either the store owner or the Sixpoint sales rep should have known this beer was way beyond it's BB date.
On that note, I just bought a 4 pack of Righteous Ale today with a BB date of 7/25/13 and it's quite tasty, cheers!

But it would be so much more useful to review the place here on BA...

The Bad Trader List is a necessity because currently you cannot review another user of the site.

I agree the review is the best way to handle this situation. I was just making another suggestion in case the OP didn't want to go that route for some reason.

It is the job of Sixpoint's distributor - not the retailer's - to monitor freshness and pull out of date stock.

Email/call/write Sixpoint (do not use "Facebook") - they even have a page on their website for this specific problem - Stay Fresh By Reporting Expired Beer - and tell them about the old stock and they're supposed to call their local distributor and have the stuff pulled and replaced/credited.

Sadly, too many breweries do not list their distributors on their websites (choosing for clunky "Beer Finder" pages) but if you know it or can ask a local retailer who it is, you can also attempt to get in touch with them directly.

am I the only person that doesn't mind places like that??

Sure, I don't buy my ipas there, but it's places like that I've found sucaba/parabola a year after release. I've also found 2 year old deliverance and older viscosity.

This is an excellent point. Any self-respecting BA will have two kinds of shops he frequents--the "good" shops where they are highly knowledgeable and get a lot of great stuff in and the "middling" shops, that get good stuff in, but are somewhat of a well-kept secret, that will have limited releases on the shelves long after the well-reputed shops are long-gone.

I was able to get Love Child 2 well after release and both Love Child 3 and 2013 Saison-Brett because I go to both types of shop.
