i don't make a habit of it, as bad beer is (generally speaking) still pretty good in the overall realm of beverages. but naturally there are exceptions. 3 notable drainpours:

    1. bud chelada
    2. wild blue
    3. mikkeller black hole (peat whiskey edition)

I drain pour infected, contaminated, or plain ol' disgusting beer... a lot more often at tastings than at my own place. At home I've probably drain poured 4-5 beers in the last 6 months because they fit one of the above criteria.

Even if it's bad, if I just don't like the taste of it and have multiples, I'm not going to pour it all... I'll either give it to friends with different tastes or trade it for something I'd like better.

I've drain poured many foul brews, but that's because I have good taste & I'm not an alcoholic.

The term "drainpour" is just slang for a bad beer, or one you don't particularly care for.

Not to be taken literally as something that was physically poured down a sink. Although sometimes, this might also be the case -- but not nearly as often as the term is used.

i had a sample of the voodoo bacon trash beer, someone brought it to a bottle share as a joke and everyone thought it was pretty disgusting...which it most certainly was. that is the only time i poured one out.

honestly i don't understand how some people can pour out so many though, i really look into what i'm buying before hand so i don't just get caught off guard by a horrible tasting brew (or something im not familiar with at all) that is just gonna be so intolerable to the point where its just dumped out.

when you dive right into a beer from a brewery you never checked out of course it's gonna be a surprise as to whether its good or not. but if you're trying something completely new it should be a flagship beer so you understand how they approach something basic. but if you jump into a big beer thats limited from a brewery thats new to you, well i only see that ending in disappointment....thus the dreaded drain pour.

if you drink something to the point where it makes you wanna puke, yeah by all means dump it but if its just an off taste then just suck it up and down it ! don't be a wimp

I once finished a Magic Hat Hicu. The only beer I ever DP'd was a 750 of Petrus Aged Red.

Only one drain pour and that was a shared bottle of something my tasting partner and I just couldn't stomach. Not infected, just... piss poor craft brew. Usually if I absolutely cannot stand something I'm drinking I'll either mix it (with cola) or cook with it. Call me a grumpy old man but I agree with the OP, I don't understand how drainpouring became something to brag about either.

I drain pour when I feel it's appropriate. It's my business, and mine only. If you still want to refer to yourself as TBALLZ in your 30's, well...that's your business. ;-P

I still have ColecoVision and the adaptor.

    Cheers!

There are definitely styles I like MUCH less than others. When dealing with these sorts of beers I simply refuse to buy them without tasting them first. Prevention right? I've gotten pretty lucky with my beer gumption over the years I guess? Nothing I picked out was ever insanely bad enough to poor down the drain, although there have been awful beers.

    Thanks for the explanation.

If 30 seconds of writing is "too long," I think that shows us a bit of the cause of the drain pour problem. Y'all hopped up on ADHD meds

Rarely do I truly drain pour because a beer is undrinkable to me. Pumking is the last one I can think of. Quite often though, I might not finish a bomber. Normally I consume my beer after my youngest has gone to bed. And quite often the invite from my wife to also go to bed wins the argument between the beer and her in my head.

BTW, in addition to not counting infected beers, I don't count old IPAs that were my fault for not checking the date.

I drain pour regularly, if a beer I have bought and tasted isn't worth the damage the calories and alcohol does to my body, it's an immediate drain pour. Sometimes it's an infected beer, sometimes I just don't like it and sometimes I just wanted half a bomber of that imperial stout that has been sitting in my closet.

Although I did like the comment in the beginning about making bread with the beer, I could imagine doing that sometimes.

I wish I would have read the EDIT in the OP before I voted. I've "drain poured" somewhere around 3 beers or so in my life, but they were all infected.

So really, I've never drain poured because of taste. For brews I'm not fond of, I'll finish the pack over time, bring them to a party, or cook with them. I try to look up anything I've never had before on BA to reduce the chances of my buying something really off-putting.

Kind of a personal thing, though. I just can't stand consumables going to waste.

I have drain poured 3 beers one was a malt liquor that I bought to get the rating for that category, one tasted like pencil erasers and the last one had a bitter that was clawing at the back of my throat painfully.

I can't remember pouring out something that I've purchased on my own, although it certainly may have happened. Maybe some Harpoon Winter Warmer way back. Everything that I have poured out since then has been gifted to me, left at my house after a party, etc.

I just recently received a four-pack of Widmer Brothers Nelson Imperial IPA, which is fairly highly rated. Problem is that it is over 8 months old. I had one and it didn't taste very good to me, but wasn't offensive. I'm currently on the fence about what to do with the other 3.
