This past weekend I made a trip out to Kalamazoo and visited Bell's brewery. While I quite enjoyed the experience overall, I was disappointed to find out that they don't do growler fills. At all. I've heard of breweries not offering certain beers in growlers, such as limited releases or premium beers, but why would a brewery not offer growler fills at all? What other breweries do not offer growler fills?

Sierra Nevada didn't for a long time. They finally started filling growlers a few years ago.

Allagash does not. When you ask, they will tell you it improves quality control once their beers leave the brewery, as most of their brews do not lend themselves to mass consumption. Made sense to me, and to each their own. No one tells an artist what kind of paint to use (horrible analogy, but oh well)...

Depending on the state, there are different laws governing this and it depends on licensing and what not. Flying Dog just got permission to sell pints, and I think growler fills (along with the rest of the county or state, not sure). The links below are the same.

House Bill 955: As early as July 1, we will be able to fill and sell growlers at the brewery, allowing you to purchase and take home beer fresh off our taps.

House Bill 4/Senate Bill 32: We will be able to sell beer by the glass in our taproom as early as July 1. This legislation will allow us to have additional sampling opportunities for our fans, entertain more impromptu visits, and increase tourism and business across the state.

definitely the biggest bummer i can think of, but on the other hand that is partly why visiting their taproom is such an awesome time, every time

Funkwerks doesn't as they claim they the loss of carbonation is a detriment to the beer.

Bell's can't do growler fills because of silly Michigan growler laws, however there is a bill that was just approved by the Senate and should be approved by the House that is changing that so basically everyone with a liquor license can sell growlers, and will take effect immediately when passed. Hopefully the next time you visit Kalamazoo you'll be able to get a growler from Bell's!

Breweries in Texas still can't do growler fills... even with our new craft-friendly laws that just passed (they only allow on-premises sale of beer). There's now an exception however... breweries under 10k bbl-per-year can convert to a brewpub license however (after the law goes into effect) and then both distribute beer and sell whatever the heck they want at the brewery (growlers, bottles/cans, on-premises pints). So we'll probably see a lot more.

Jester King is going to be changing to a brewpub license, for instance.

Look at this thread for more information on MD growler fills, which we just got passed but still has silly addendums.

That 'silly Michigan law' stipulates that breweries that are classed as "Brewery" within the legal categories, and Bell's is large enough to fit that definition, cannot offer growlers. However, the new law that is making its way through the legislature may or may not cause a change for Bell's. I think in the past it has been said that Larry Bell does not want to sell beer in growlers because he can't control the ultimate quality of the beer in the growler after it has left the brewery. Time will tell whether a change is in the offing for Bell's.

A friend in Kalamazoo said that when he started up, Larry sold beer in cubitainers (sort of plastic growlers).

So how does Founders fill growlers? Both "breweries" offer a limited food menu as well. Not sure what the difference is? I view growlers as a safety issue as well. Much better to have 4-5 beers out of a growler at home that night than to have 4-5 beers at the brewery and then drive home.

None in Mississippi, no brew pubs or tap rooms. Stupid 3 tier system.

What I don understand is breweries that do growlers but won't refill them, a la Three Floyds.

Just curious, what is it about the three tier system in Mississppi that prevents brew pubs and tap rooms? Lots of states have a three tier system and have plenty of brewpubs/taprooms/growler-fill spots. I know you guys have some crazy bass-ackward laws down there, I'm just not sure the three tier system is too blame in this case.

Sounds like they want to sell you new glass every time you get a growler. Greedy if you ask me.

The 3 tier system is different from state to state.

You can have a brew pub but you can't be a brewery and a brew pub.

    (3) Light wine or beer manufactured by a brewpub shall not be sold away from the premises of such brewpub (as defined in Section 27-71-301, Mississippi Code of 1972) and shall not be packaged in any form that it may be carried away from the premises; provided, however, that the final one hundred (100) gallons of beer within a fermenting tank may be placed in kegs for sale on the premises to facilitate transition from one fermenting tank to another.

In Mississippi you can't sell beer at a brewery. I think the new law allows youto give so many oz's as samples.

Alabama breweries can't fill growlers either. Hopefully this will all be fixed sometime soon! It would be nice to get a fill from the source!
