Crabtree offers a nice berliner weisse if they make it out your way. Only $4.99 a bomber.

Don't get the one from White Birch, I like most of their releases, but this was just awful.

I would jump on board with the 1809 and would also second Intergalactic Acid from The Tap

Based on the price you indicate, I'm guessing you have the new White Birch bomber near you. I didn't think it was as good as their last release of this which I loved and had a nice lemony touch. Dying to get some New Glarus...finally time for a trade request I guess.

While the Night Shift Stuff is very, very good IMO, it is hardly a good example of the traditional Berliner. More of a Berliner "Type" beer.

A true berliner should be basically 50% wheat malt, 50% pilsner, and it should be fermented with nothing but Saccharomyces and Lacto, with no Brett, Pedio or other funky stuff. The aspect of the traditional beer that is most often modified in today's versions though is the ABV. Traditional Berliners were about 2.5 to 3.5 ABV. The Night shift ones for example tend to run about 6%.

This isn't just for you, but for anyone who can shed some light on this question. I've noticed that some beers have a real grainy taste on my palate, sometimes all the way to a crushed aspirin quality that I definitely don't care for. I think most of these have some amount of Pilsner malt. Is this normal? Is it a desired quality? I don't drink many (any) straight-up Pilsner style beers so I'm not very familiar with this malt's profile. Just wondering if I'm defective and/or if I should just avoid beers that use Pilsner malt. I suppose other factors, like yeast, could also be at play.

Last week I saw a 4-pack of Festina Peche for about 10 bucks at my local Wegmans (King of Prussia). Do you consider that too much?

    Cheers!

Seriously though, look at the link below and scroll down to "Husky/Grainy" on page 11.

And yet it doesn't fall into the style. Just because he uses the traditional recipe doesn't mean he's getting the traditional results ie higher abv. He is most likely getting better efficiency from today's fully modified grains and while he is using a yeast from a now defunct traditional brewery who is to say that the yeast hasn't mutated since 1809 or had the levels of the mixed culture be changed as the organisms grow at different rates.

There is a grainy aspect to some malt and a sugary coarseness to really sweet beers. Maybe you mean this. Pilsner malt is actually the malt that gives a beer it's "round" taste and it's pretty light.

So people like the taste of crushed aspirin, or I'm picking up something others aren't? I know you're (kind of) joking and I know everyone's palate is different; just genuinely curious how this coarse graininess is a desirable quality in beer.

A beer that is distributed in only one state is not very ‘helpful’ for those of us in the other 49 states.

    Cheers!

P.S. I recognize that you are from a bordering state.

Just wait until the folks at "ontap beer enhancer" catch wind of this discussion. They will package some lactic acid for you to squirt into your favorite BMC to make insta-liner. Or is that berlinarita? Budliner? Berlinaizer? Milleriner?

    Florida Weisse - too soon?
