I'm with you, I love me some floaties. Not sure what people expect from unfiltered beer.

I don't understand why people who are turned off by floaties in a beer don't pour the beer in such a way as to let the sediment settle and not pour the entire bottle/can into the glass. I usually enjoy the dregs in my glass but for certain beers like mongo I leave the last few ounces in the bottle and just swig it right from the bottle.

This. Most beers will drop water bright without filtration , a fact well recognised by such as John Courage in the 1700s who valued clarity as a sign of quality.
I home brewed for around 30 years, most of my efforts weren't cloudy though a few did have a slight haze.I never had any method of filtering them , if they had been brewed well they were clear.[IMG]

Heady is stunningly beautiful in a glass (against the "rules" or not). The color in one of those smallish, curved pint glasses (like the FFF pint glasses) is really, really something else.

For me, ugliest pours I can think of were DFH 61 (which had a taste to match) and the Dark Horse Crooked Tree Citra variant which poured pretty much brown, but tasted spectacular.

Thanks. I'm not a home brewer myself, but one day hope to try it. I'll make sure to get my facts from the 1700's straight before I make anymore rash posts in these forums. I myself just don't have a huge problem with "floaties." Cheers. Oh and the worst looking beer I've ever seen is an outdated bottle on the shelf at a local retailer.

Idiot's Drool. Flat, murky, brown pond water.

Not all beers do clear of course, particularly wheat beers. I recently was a judge in a competition open to all beer styles. When it came to putting down a mark in the "appearance" column for a wheat vanilla beer I didn't know what to do, all the other beers were crystal clear! It came second overall though .
I don't think that for such as Pale Ales though there's much justification for poor appearence. At a brewery we were invited to try a special-the Pale Ale to the last 18 gallons of which had been added several pounds of West Coast hops.If any beer ought to have been cloudy this was it , it hadn't been filtered and it was pretty clear.

I'm confused by the multiple posts about 'floaties' in Rochefort 10. Sounds like user error to me. If you enjoyed it with all the yeast, etc dumped in the glass, you'll really like it poured properly.

I'm with you on this. If my beers lack decent clarity (beyond a certain chill haze that I find difficult to avoid) I consider it a failure on my part. Appearance isn't as important as taste, but it matters.

oh, I want to see it ... it's not like it frightened me or made me wretch. and what's funny is other than all the junk floating in it, it obviously looks like a well-made beer -- sturdy construction. like the Belgians do.

but it's uglier than an old toad. easily the best ugly beer i've had ... i can't imagine how good it must be straight from the monks on their home turf

The early batches I had of Lunch were the color of and as clear as my khakis. It's much prettier now.

One of the most disgusting looking beers that I have ever had was Delirium Tremens. There were so many freakin floaties that even the head was covered in little brown and yellow specks, but by God, it was absolutely delicious.

Another vote for Heady Topper. While it smells and tastes wonderful, I've often wondered how it ranks so high when BA has a rating for "appearance." I'm not sure how you could score it above 3.5 with decent eyesight.

One more. Taking the IPA freshness fanaticism to the extreme? (note: neither pic mine)
