Oh..."Don't be afraid to bring in the kristall's, dunkel's, and weizenbock's".... I missed that. I saw "hefeweizen" in the heading and I zeroed in on just the light, unfiltered type.

...but they unfortunately need to make more of it. It was only released in 22oz as a seasonal well over a year ago.

I know. And it was only that one time I had it (in other words, it was all from one keg) - it was on tap at the bar I worked at. But I couldn't stop drinking the thing after shifts - no one else was and hardly anyone bought a glass. That's not to say that having it again on tap or from a bottle it would be just as excellent. The depth and character of the esters was just spectacular, the balance between that and the malt wonderful, not too mention the body was just so damn smooth. I'd recognize it immediately in a blind tasting.

Don't get me wrong, the Weihenstephaner is out of this world. I can buy a dusty old bottle that might be up to a year old and it's still tastier and more well done than most.

This thread has finally made me want to try Hefeweizens. Thanks everyone, and thanks for the recommendations.

If I can find it fresh, the epitome of a hefeweizen is Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier for me.

Below is what I just posted in another thread:

“Hefeweizen beers are excellent summer sippers. I have already purchased six-packs of Troegs Dreamweaver Wheat and Stoudt’s Heifer-in-Wheat. They are both very tasty German wheat beers!”

    Cheers!

P.S. Add Sly Fox Royal Weiss to the list!

I had some Paulaner hef's the other day and really enjoyed it. I really do not care for the american versions, just not interesting enough and they have always dissapointed me and came across as thin, watery, and bland.

Of coarse Live Oak, but other Texas greats include Austin Beerworks Heisenburg, and Karbach Weisse Versa.

I could and probably will drink Weihenstephaner Hefe all summer long. Just the best I have had. Funny that Widmer built their empire on that style of beer, and Weihenstephaner's version is 1000x better.

Also, Weihenstephaner Vitus is a marvelous summer beer with a little extra ABV to get you going

I would agree that the same depth of flavor isn't there, but it is really delicious nonetheless.

    lolled

It's pronounced "heffy" and it's short for heffy-weizen.

The bar where I drink has been keeping Weihenstephaner on tap. It's noticably more enjoyable than the bottle. Something about the body, I think, and a bit more fresh in taste. If you have never had it on tap it's not to be missed.

I had kind of the opposite experience. First Weizen I had was Sunspot (Greenbush) - on tap, knew it was local and loved it. Then I tried SN Keller, and then I got into the German hefes. If I could have a tap of Weihenstephaner at my house for the summer - well, I could think of worst things. Enjoyed Paulaner too...

Just got back from 8 days in Munich on business. It was warm weather most days, so I was drinking "Weissbier" on the reg: Augustiner, Paulaner, Hofbrau, Hacker-Pschorr, Franziskaner, etc and Andechser at their restaurant. I enjoyed them but since I've been back in the states the last few days I've been sipping on IPAs. I missed the hoppier stuff.

Best beer story about Munich: I was at the office I was working at one day and at 9 am they mention that we're going to take a break at 10 because they will be serving us "weisswurst" (white sausage). I was a little puzzled by this, but said OK. Then at 10 AM they call us into the next room and the entire office is standing around eating white sausage, soft pretzels, and drinking Paulaner Munchnerweissbier. They said it's a Bavarian tradition that you have to do this in the morning. Needless to say I loved Munich...

Love Erdinger's and Ayinger's. Also, Franziskaner is great. Not quite as big on Paulaner, but I do like Weihenstephaner.

Severely underwhelmed by Sierra Nevada's Keller. I need to revisit Dry Dock's, but I'm a big fan of both hefeweizens I had from Wynkoop in Denver. Does anyone know if Wnykoop cans a hefeweizen now? I haven't been back to Colorado for months, but I'll be there in July and I'm fixin' to get me some tasty hefeweizen.

How long have you been drinking for? You do realize that it's Wednesday, right?
