Remember when a $15 for a bottle of beer gave you pause?

Still gives me pause. But, sadly I ususally go for it. And some have made the leap into $15 range only recently. I thought I remember buying Black Xanthus for under $10 a year or two ago. Now it's right up there in the Parabola price range.:slight_frown:

Hah, a few of you guys seem to be making the false equation that buying expensive bottles and buying inexpensive bottles are exclusive of each other.

Of course I make value calculations, and enjoy Stone's 5.99 barleywines or whatever, but there are so many beers around or above the $15 per 750ml (or equivalent) point that are worth it: FW's anniversaries, (some of) Bruery's sours, 3 Fonteinen, RR's sours, Almanac's sours, Hill Farmstead's anything, etc. and so forth. And yet at one time I would think, 'beer? worth that much? impossible!!' I remember looking askance at something from DuPont for $8.99 or so, not knowing there could be real complexity in a beer.

Actually, surely you guys all realise this is how most of the drinking public thinks. I think it really is striking that a little bit of exposure can alter perspective so much.

And yeah, I have no idea why Eclipse is $30/bottle.

Absolutely, and not budget busters like this thread was supposed to be about! Ha! Try to find an Espresso RIS if you can. Other than Doom it has been one of the best new beers I've tried this year.

There is too much good beer out there that is a reasonable price these days for me to automatically pay out the nose for a single bottle.

If someone wants more than $15 for a bottle then it had better be something I've been waiting forever for it to come out and comes highly recommended. To get the same money out of me a second time it needs to have been a life changing experience.

I don't look for beer by shopping "the left side of the menu," but I also am more willing now than I used to be at spending on quality beers. I will buy an 8.99 6-pack (Lagunitas) as quick as I will buy a $24.99 bomber (BlackOps, etc). I remember when I thought Belhaven Scottish Ale was "crazy expensive" at $35/24 pack (turns out to be the same as my $8.99/6 reference above!), but I still bought it anyway. What a long way I have come in willingness to spend, but also the ability to spend on good beers has increased somewhat as well. If you had told me 5 years ago that I'd buy both the '11 and the '12 Utopias, I would have said you were crazy. Now I think I am...

I pause at less than half that price - and I've been drinking craft beer for over 20 yrs. Too many other options than to be wasting money on bombers where most likely the beer doesn't give me any more satisfaction than beers that come in six packs.

    Still does.

Doesn't mean I won't ever spend that much on a beer, but even a $10 price tag gives me pause. Or ~$6 for a pint of Lunch (which I still pay, but...well, I pause).

$6+ bombers give me pause. Any sixer over $9 gives me pause. I am truly one of the Men o' pause.

I remember having a discussion with my buddy about whether or not we should spend $35.00 to go to Live Aid.
    Glad we did.

    It seems so long ago.
Last week when Bois hit the shelves (at $32.00) the only pause was should I buy 1 or 2 or 3.

My mindset has defiantly changed from thinking $15 is crazy to pay, to consistently buying bottles for much more than that. I have had too many instances of not purchasing something that I thought was too expensive and later regretting it or watching subsequent releases be even more expensive or impossible to find. Usually any beer at that price point has some unique quality about it that justifies a higher price.

What really gives me pause is bombers of ordinary style beers for $10 and up. This seems to be more prevalent in Chicago than some other cities I've been to.

Eclipse is overpriced for what it is and sits on shelves here unpurchased.
