I am worried that my Pliny won't make it to Detroit from Cali at temps over 80 degrees. Does anyone have any experience with ground shipping long distances at high temps? Should I be concerned?

Are you being sarcastic inferring that you'll drink it or are you being serious claiming that it will skunk?

You're fine. All beer is optimally stored between 38-55 or so, but a few days a bit above that won't drastically change it. 80 isn't that hot, and half the country trades in that temp all the time. Sitting on a truck for a weekend at 110 degrees in the peak of summer - now that might hurt your beer, and that's what you want to avoid.

Vinnie distributes Pliny to Colorado and Philadelphia even in the summer and no one is more anal than him. It's fine.

Skunking is a result of UV light. If your Pliny is in exposed to light en route, then whoever packed it is using some sort of bizarre and risky technique.

OP, your beer will be fine. Just make sure your trading partner sends early in the week in order to prevent it sitting in a truck over the weekend.

Don't stress so much. It's just beer, not a vital organ.

Just drink it when you get it.

At what temperatures do you guys start to worry?

I mean, distributors ever not ship beer across the country because it is too hot?

I received a box the other week and I noticed almost all of the ipas were underwhelming and some I've had before. I'm wondering if the 100 plus degree weather currently has had effect.

Right, how does FW Walker get Double Jack to Chicago in such great condition? I'm sure it goes out on Monday, gets to the shelf at Binny's on Thursday. En route I'm sure it's cooking, but 4 or 5 days isn't a huge deal.

That was like not even one of the top 5 I would have provided, but that is a good one. She turned the corner sometime when I was in college I think.

The problem is that if it's 80 outside it could be substantially hotter in a truck.

I don't really have any science. I do know that formation of some off-flavors is highly temperature dependent, and can happen in mere days at temperatures lower than UPS trucks can get to. Shipping during warm spells is just a gamble.

But for some reason my experience has been that shipped IPAs are just not as good as ones that haven't been shipped (EXCEPT for cans, those seem to do fine). I've been pretty consistently underwhelmed by IPAs I've traded for, although the only ones I've been able to have both ways are Alpine's bottled stuff. Even that, just coming up from SoCal, seems off to me. It's entirely possible that I'm crazy, but I basically don't trade for IPAs any more, except HF, and that's as much because I want to share it as anything else.

    Here's what I just read:

Blah blah blah California has the best IPAs in the world blah blah blah other states have shitty IPAs blah blah blah.

Ship on a mon and if you pack it right it will be insulated from the worst of the heat.
