    Hello,
We're Torontonians coming to Brooklyn for 5 days in August. Aside from Spyutin Devul, we're not sure what bars one would recommend in either Brooklyn or Manhattan.

We're pretty much deprived of all good US craft beer, so drinking local or from other parts of the US would be great. Hell, having access to some nice Belgian imports would also be delicious.

I'm not sure if there's a retail store that you'd recommend as well. Hoping/Dreaming we can find some Russian River or New Belgium beer somewhere either to drink or take home.

    Thanks for your help

What part of Brooklyn will you be staying in? Bierkraft in Park Slope is a great bottle shop, although a little pricey. Bar wise, you have Mugs and Barcade close to Spuyten.

As far as RR or NB, I hate to disappoint but I dont think either distribute to NY

I'd suggest Downtown Bar & Grill, Bar Great Harry and Strong Place in Carroll Gardens, as well as American Beer Distributors for picking up bottles. Bar Great Harry is on Smith Street and the other three are on Court Street.

In Park Slope there is 4th Ave Pub, Pacific Standard and Mission Dolores, all on 4th Avenue. Bierkraft does have a great selection but is very pricey. In Park Slope you can go into a lot of corner stores and grocery stores and they'll have really good beer selections. My favorite is the Key Food on Flatbush Ave in between 7th and 8th Ave, tons of great bottles at really good prices, 10.50 for a six pack of SN Bigfoot when it was out.

I would also suggest doing a nice walk over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan and then heading north through the LES to get to New Beer Distributors on Chrystie St followed by Whole Foods on Houston just another couple blocks up.

If you're there on a friday through sunday a trip to brooklyn brewery is always fun. Afterwards you can head right next door to brooklyn bowl for some awesome music usually and some brooklyn based craft beers.

In manhattan ginger man, blind tiger, rattle n hum, pony bar, and like 10 other awesome places for consistently good craft beer selections on tap. Pick any of those 4 and you're in for a good night. Ginger and rattle are 3 streets apart between the same 2 avenues and very close to penn station/madison square garden.

If you're in Carroll Gardens, Bar Great Harry is your closest bet. You'll also be a close walk to the Atlantic Chip Shop, which has great fish and chips and a respectable beer list. I find American Beer Distributors a little pricey, but the selection is pretty good.

Walk east instead of north, and you'll get to all those Fourth Avenue bars already mentioned, plus Bierkraft on Fifth Ave.; at Bierkraft, instead of getting bottles, I'd recommend getting a growler to stay - that may be about your cheapest option for sit-down beer anywhere ($9.95 for four pints, for their cheapest selections). Their sandwiches are great, too, and they have a nice garden out back.

At Fifth Ave. and 3rd Street is The Gate, which always has great beer on tap and is a very comfortable pub. Hop on the B63 bus across the street, and ride down to Eagle Provisions at Fifth Ave. and 18th Street (or walk - it's not all that far). There you'll find a bottle selection to rival anyplace else in the city, for very good prices. It's a very nice Polish deli, too (though I have to say that the ham at Jubilat, a block up, is better).

You really don't need to leave Brooklyn, or even the general area where you'll be staying, to get the best beer NYC has to offer. That said, I will second the suggestion to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and make your way to New Beer and the Whole Foods Beer Room, which both fill growlers as well (unlike Bierkraft, though, you can't drink them there) - walk over, enjoy the view, then take the subway back with your bags of beer.

Enjoy your visit. If you have any questions, drop me a line.

Hm. I didn't mention (because I haven't been there) Beer Table, which is at Seventh Ave. and 14th St. in Park Slope. Friends speak highly of it, though, both the food and the beer selection. Other than that, I'll repeat that the fish and chips at the Chip Shop and the sandwiches at Bierkraft are excellent. If you're in Manhattan, Jimmy's #43 in the East Village has good food and good beer.

Oh, and I forgot Draft Barn, which is at Third Avenue and 12th St. in Brooklyn. A lot of European beers on tap, plus some good American ones, with solid, Eastern-European style food. And there's a very nice taco joint across the street from Mission Dolores.
