I was just curious to know what you all do when people offer you a bottle of a decent craft beer but they don't give you a glass. In other words, without much thought - or perhaps ignorance - they are expecting you to drink right out of the bottle. Would you ask for a glass? Or would you just go along with their expectation (or ignorance, if you think of it that way)?

To add a little more complexity to the question, would you go even further and ask for a specific style-related glass to best match the beer you were drinking? Curious to hear what you do.

I usually just break the bottle(empty of course) of the servers head and then spit on them.

Ask for a glass, and then make a mental note to never return to that bar.

I absolutely would ask for a glass. You are the customer and as long as you do it in a nice way I can't see why they wouldn't provide one.

If it's a bar ask for a glass. If it's someone's home then I would be more cautious. If you are a guest you should act like one but a paying customer deserves the right attention.

If they do not offer you the any glass when serving a craft beer, I highly doubt that they will have the proper glassware you are looking for. That second request would most likely move you into the "high maintenance" column

And to answer your main question with more questions, how well do I know the person? What is the situation?

Some situations I may ask for a glass, other situations I would graciously take the offered bottle

    Depends...

If we're talking about a bar, ask for a glass and don't come back. Any bar carrying something decent should know better
If we're talking about hanging out with friends/family, ask for a glass but don't be picky about style. I've never found the type of glass to be all that important to begin with.

Yes, I ask for a glass. If they bring me a sub par glass, I ask for a Teku or a Tulip. If they don't have either, I make a big pfffft sound, shrug my shoulders and drain pour the beer.

Recently at a restaurant in WI the wait staff scoffed at me for asking for a fresh glass every time I ordered a different beer.

If at a bar I'd definitely ask for a glass -- that's part of the drinking experience, and they'd certainly have plenty of glasses.

If at a private function, then I'd let the beer be my guide. If it's a bottle-conditioned beer, then I'd ask for a glass, but I would not be picky about the style of the glass. If the beer is not bottle-conditioned, then I'd 'rough it' (which I assume the rest of the guests are doing with their bottles).

However, if it's an extra-special beer that I've never had and really want to enjoy this opportunity, then I'd also ask for a glass in that situation, but I'd still not be picky about the glass style.

To be honest, I wouldn't think about it too much unless I was at a bar. There I would probably ask for a glass even without caring about the type of glass. At someone's house? Wouldn't really care and would enjoy it out of the bottle. Believe it or not good beer tastes pretty darn good even straight out of the bottle......and yes, can too. I drink it this way quite often.

I would just ask (politely of course) for a glass... what would you do if they brought you your food but you didn't have flatware? Eat it with you hands?

This just recently happened to me with Oaked Arrogant Bastard - we were at an ok restaurant that surprisingly had a decent selection of craft beer. I asked for a glass, and waited for about 5 minutes, no glass. I walked up to the bar to ask again, and the bar tender said he put the glass in the ice chest to 'chill it' for me.

Great question. Believe it or not, when starting the thread, I wasn't even thinking about bars or business establishments (though I'm glad that some of the responders thought of that). I was actually thinking of when you are invited to friends' or people's homes.

If it is at a private place ( Friend or family members) and they offer you a decent beer, they probably know to use a glass. If they offer you a Bud Light it doesn't really matter.

when I'm with my friends and we're having a craft beer that deserves a glass, we'll get glasses and enjoy. If it's a normal pale ale or of the like, bottle is fine in the garage.

At a bar or restaurant - I ask for a glass but I usually don't need to since I try to stay away from buying bottles when I'm out. The few times I order a bottle in a bar or restaurant I ask for it to be delivered unopened so I can check the dates. Am I being picky? Hell yes. When I'm paying a 300% mark up on something I can enjoy just as much or more at home, I don't consider it picky. And when I ask for a glass, I ask for a warm one.

The solution? Order a draft beer. It's alot easier to serve in a glass.

When I go to family or friend's houses - I bring my own glass. My family expects it, my friends are getting used to it.

I would definitely ask for a glass if I was in a bar or restaurant. My guess is that if they don't offer you a glass in the first place, requesting a specific glass will only result in a blank look form your waitperson. A pint glass is fine.

I have no problem with politely asking for a glass when at a family member's house (or just getting it myself.) But I wouldn't at a friend's place. They most likely went out of their way to buy some craft beer for my benefit Requesting a glass (especially asking for a specific glass) is rather high patience in that situation. I'm just glad that I have something other than water to drink.
