If it is this easy to hype a beer, I need to start some threads about Grapefruit Jungle and Velvet Fog.

Right now you can trade for a Fou Foune and St Lam. For a beer no one has tried.

Not only that, but I would say this is far from a brewery that has a proven track record when it comes to extracting magic from barrels - I'm not saying that they can't do it, but there's just a huge lack of evidence. I may be alone in this belief, but I think it takes more than dumb luck and a decent base beer to create a world-class barrel-aged beer.

And seriously, Jack Daniels and Cabernet?

Oh, sorry. I meant 40 and 50 cases!!!!

Really sucks to see all the negativity in this thread. Im looking forward to this beer. Mexican Cake is a good stout and the barrel aged beers(especially the apple brand tripel) I've had from Westbrook I enjoyed. That being said it seems like any time a beer is first released a thread like this pops up and it goes the same way every time.

I think these are going to be interesting. I worked out a pre-trade that I think is pretty fair. If the limit gets dropped to two and the guy who's pre-trading with me backs out, I won't lose sleep.

I actually kinda want to try the Cabernet one. Who puts a pepper/chocolate/cinnamon/vanilla stout in a red wine barrel? I just want to see what that's going to taste like...

That, and I think a lot of people are worried they're "under trading" their bottles because there's only 500 or 600 or whatever bottles out there, and this is their shot to go out and really land a top want. If it's good, they'll make it again. See also: KBBS, Mornin Delight, BA Abraxas, etc., etc. Chocolate Rain was super limited once, now people only care about batch 1 because it's rare, even though batch 3 can be had very reasonably and it's 98% the same beer.

That said, it is awesome that lots more breweries are coming out with some barrel aged offerings and aren't just going the standard "toss it in a bourbon barrel" route. I love the wacky barrel treatments (I'm a huge fan of wine barrel stuff, specifically if it's sour). Hopefully they catch on locally/regionally, and these breweries can afford to increase their barrel output and be profitable, so there's more to go around for everyone.

Nope. It makes for entertaining and laughable trade offers though.

I just love that the "value" can be lowered, or raised, or determined at all, before the shit's even sold to anyone. no reviews, no tap samples, not a long lineage of other BA successes (this last one is very important to me). This stuff could be '09 Abyssed, JD Blackbeerded, BB Bad Elmer Portered, or even just slightly Peruvian Morninged, and people are already signing up to chop their left and right nuts for a set.

again, i'm not trying to be negative about the beer, I haven't tried it either, it could be a jesus tears/unicorn pee blend, and honest to god i want a set and will try to get one... i'm just hoping that at least people could be mildly neutral about it until it comes out!

but it could be the next KBBS or ba abraxas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! think of how much value it will gain when all the locals give it 5s across the board

I miss by a day, I'll be in Myrtle Beach on Fri and Charleston on Sat, I won't ruin a day at the beach for beer and a 7hr total ride.

Couldn't agree more. I also agree that these pre-trades are the main reason for most of the hype. Oh, and for the record Chrismetcalfe was a VERY fair and generous trader when regular Mexican Cake came out. Just my two cents.

Kalvipoeg at the Gates of Hell didn't seem to be, despite pretty nice ratings (4.53 over 65 ratings, although just 7 reviews). (Technically a baltic porter, but yeah.) And a quick scan indicates the FL ratings aren't bad at all, and maybe even lower than the out-of-state ones I glanced at. For however much people rip on FL and CCB's alleged hype machine, this beer didn't go for much. Hell, toofdoc couldn't trade it $4$ for Momi Hiwa despite several tries.
