Looks terrific -- then I clicked on their abbreviated Zwick'l Kellerbier and like Providence's lust above... I need that Krug! :grinning:

Okay friends, because of this thread the bottles of Schlenkerla Eiche at a local caught my eye this afternoon, had to grab one.

Bad news: Bottle was a massive flippin' gusher upon capping (and no, it hadn't been shaken up and actually sat warming for 30 minutes or more in my kitchen)!

Good news: Quite tasty, oaky-smoky, malty smooth with some vague bitterness in the finish... 8% ABV, huh? Talk about a stealth beer!

    My original review from 2011.

It's strictly a winter seasonal here in Germany, so I always try to grab 1 or 2 around the holidays.

It makes me sad that you can pick this up at your local bottle shop in Illinois while I cannot, being only about 150 miles away. Please don't misunderstand, it's a great thing for anyone anywhere to be able to pick up great beers. It just goes to show the distribution policy and much that is wrong with German brewing. All of our best beers are better known locally only and abroad (mainly US), but not nationwide.

While I'm only speaking based upon experience travelling, but Ayinger seems to be a prime example. In the Munich area, they're borderline nonexistant. Other than the S&T restaurant, I don't think I've seen anything from them anywhere. However over here in the states they're one of the top 5 best known German brewers.

Would you buy beer from the German Alps Brewing Company?

True, Ayinger is extremely rare here. It's more likely to find a cheap, local license brew of a rather distant region (like I have recently found a "Wendelsteiner Hefe Weissbier" that is brewed by Hopf) than this. I have only yet found the Celebrator and the Lager (both of them at Maruhn in Darmstadt). No chance to find them at a regular bottle shop.

Yeah... but I have to wonder how old this beer is. Albeit, it's been kept in a cooler all this time, but the gusher startled me.

I think it was pointed out in the original thread already: the problem is, that German breweries that offer ALL of the most popular styles of the country at higher prices might be mistrusted. Oettinger is doing that for instance, although obviously they are not being mistrusted in popular opinion, due to their low prices. And some bottle shop-chains have siimilar (licensed-brewed) concepts.
But you have laid down all the points of your concept (i.e., it's not gonna be a cheap brand). It needs a lot of work, PR and most of all quality, but it would be an interesting concept for Germany. If successful, it would sell for millions to Radeberger Group within months.

Landbier is basically a meaningless term used to conjour up nostalgic rural associations.

Mentioning the two words might ruffle a few feathers, but Brooklyn's Eagle Provisions has such an item.
I took a longer pause with the Reissdorf Kolsch in the same format despite liking the Marzen more.

Unfortunately I've seen them when I didn't want to buy one, and when I wanted one the store was sold out. One of these days I'll just have to reserve it.

Same here -- sort of like the mini-keg of Oberon I saw the other day... years past and I'd have been all over that like a cheap suit!
