Just for the record, those were the exact 3 (the first ones you mentioned at least) that I'm talking about.

Maybe they sent us a horrible batch or they deteriorate heavily being transported, but very lacking in taste even though they smelt weirdly amazing. Chocolate stout in particular had such a strong smell of freshly baked brownies.

Probably not. When I got them I had been drinking beer for less than a year. Looked up the one I reviewed and it was Hazelnut Brown with the smell. The beer was over carbonated and thin, but strongly sweet when the fizziness calmed down. I guess I could see why Americans would have thought it was a great beer, especially given their love for crap like Youngs Double Chocolate.

    Oh you're American.

    Awkward.

Polished off a Castle Rock Harvest ale earlier (OK).

Now quaffing a Sly Fox 113 IPA. Alright, though not the best American IPA I've tried....

Murray win means Scottish beer with the BBQ. A Dead Pony Club, straight out of the can. Rebel!

Just had the Harvest Ale yesterday. It drank well, but the aroma was skunk. Could have been a much better beer if they hadn't stuck in in a clear bottle. There is no reason a beer made with the 3 Cs shouldn't be really good.

Been drinking almost exclusively home brew, except for the odd occasions the mates and I get together to break out the American beers.

St. Austell Proper Job, nice! Much better than the cask version. I have to get more of these for "mowing the lawn" days.

Harvest Pale is a cracking pint of its type when on song which fortunately is normally the case round here. It had a shaky time when they uprated the brewery but seems better than ever now.As it's local and found in about half our pubs I tend to take it a bit for granted. Never had the bottled version though.
One bottled beer I bought last night was "Shipstones" , a reincarnation of the old and much loved beer I cut my drinking teeth on.I went directly to the brewery for it and bought half a dozen , it's going to sell out very quickly given the publicity.
