I'm going on vacation to San Francisco in September and have a few questions:

-Is Russian River Brewery worth going to? (Looks to be about an hour away)
-Does San Fran liquor stores have a decent variety of RR beers? I ask because a lot of my favorite 'local' breweries have beer available only @ their brewery and/or a very limited quanity @ liquor stores.
-Any other breweries/ brew pubs or restaurants I should check out?

This is my first trip to the west coast so input from fellow BAs is appreciated.

I like to accompany every meal with a six pack of Atom Splitter Pale Ale, and Devil's Canyon is secretly the Toppling Goliath of the west coast.

There are lots of threads here to search on the subject, but to answer a couple of your questions, Yes RR is worth the trip. You can hit Lagunitas on the way up and back, or continue north to Bear Republic. In The City proper (NEVER san fran, marks you as a tourist) For bottles there is City Beer, and a short BART ride away in Oakland is Beer Rev.

A good guide is found here: www.beerbybart.com

    Have fun!

Is Russian River worth going to? Waiting for someone to turn this thread into another growler discussion...

North- Russian River, Lagunitas, Bear Republic, etc.
SF- Toronado, City Beer, Healthy Spirits, Ales Unlimited, Whole Foods, etc.
East- Drakes, Beer Revolution, The Trappist/Provisions, etc.

Don't waste your time at Russian River. They have an archaic, bullshit growler policy.

    Shit...

I should also throw out Mikkeller Bar SF since you're coming in September and it will be open by then.

My suggestions are to take BART to the 24th Street Station have a couple of beers during Happy Hour at Rosamunde Sausage (RR Blind Pig on tap) and then cross the street to La Taqueria for a burrito/taco or two. Then, you can walk down 24th to Harrison and have some ice cream at Humphry Slocombe's. Also, the best way to refer to San Francisco to natives is The City. Accept no substitutes. Cheers!

Make sure to ask Toronado if they have any Pliny the Younger. Sometimes if you're lucky they stash a keg for out of towners who have yet to try it.

I'm actually a big fan of Magnolia over the Toronado. Much quieter crowd, and they have some real gems on with great food. A big overlooked gem is Social Kitchen.

I would skip Russian River, it is way too crowded and you can find their beers in the city. Devote your time to Marin Brewing instead.

If you have time, take the Caltrain down to Rose & Crown in Palo Alto. Best tap and bottle list on the peninsula.

The patrons at Rose and Crown are also the nicest, most interesting people you will ever meet.

Can you tell me more about Magnolia? I was reading Yelp reviews but not getting the info I needed.

What's the beer selection like? A wealth of craft? A wealth of good Germans/Belgians?

How's the food? Greasy spoon? Bar food?

I'm headed to SF next week and trying to figure out where to hit.

Food is gastropub style. Good, but small portions. IMO. And a bit above average price.

Beer is primarily English style with always something on cask. Food is kind of San Francisco'ed pub grub if that's a thing.
