I'm interested in hearing people's opinions on breweries that might not get the credit they deserve.

For me it's Highland Brewing Company out of Asheville, NC. Aside from one of their regular beers, I think their lineup is extremely solid. Their standard lineup is more or less sessionable (at or under 6%) and is to style. Probably their most known beer, Cold Mountain, is a must for me every winter. I have several friends that I got interested in craft beer via Highland. Those same friends more or less scoff at Highland when rummaging through my fridge to grab a brew. Recently, I poured a Black Mocha Stout for one of those friends without him seeing the bottle. His reaction was similar to tasting a coveted one off from a brewery with a distribution footprint the size of my studio apartment. When I told him what it was he was like "Damn, why don't I drink this anymore"? I really don't feel Highland gets the credit it deserves. I'm not sure if its because it's an availability thing or maybe because their BA and special offerings really don't make it out of the tasting room (is changing soon, growlers are coming) or what.

I wanna here what other people think. What breweries deserve more recognition.

    Smuttynose.
I love their robust porter, and their IPA is pretty good too. I also recently tried their farmhouse ale, and i enjoyed it a lot.

2 breweries that come to mind for me, which are relatively "local" to me (I live about halfway between the two breweries) are New Holland and Thirsty Dog.

New Holland has quite an impressive array of year round and seasonals. Their hoppy beers are delicious, beginning with their Mad Hatter, and trickling down through their other various "hatters." They make some great ageable beers, least of which include dragon's milk, night tripper, envious, and blue sunday. They've got easy drinking beers like sundog or monkey king, and some great cold weather beers like the poet and cabin fever. I'm surprised that you don't hear more people raving about these guys. They're top notch.

Thirsty Dog also has been solid for years. 12 Dogs of Christmas is IMO better than GLCA, for starters, but they too also have an impressive lineup. Hoppus Maximus for the hop heads, Twisted Kilt for the malt fans, Barktoberfest = classic, and Cerberus Belgian Trippel are a few of my faves. Siberian Night (an BA Siberian Night) and their BA Wee Heavy are crazy good. These guys are a stone's throw from Hoppin' Frog and a bit further from such well known breweries as Great Lakes and Fat Heads, and I think they miss out on some well deserved hype.

On this site most breweries seem to be under appreciated. While about 50 are mentioned over and over again. I am guilty of this myself. That is just the way the hype train chugs. Choo Choo.

Easily Williamsburg AleWerks...yea, yea I'm sticking close to home but they have solid put outs. Cafe Royale, Bourbon Barrel Porter, Rapadou, Pumpkin and Coffeehouse can all arguably take top spots in their respective categories.

    Love Dark Horse too

    Great thread topic

I live in Massachusetts and right now night shift brewery is getting a lot of hype for their Weiss beers. While they are good there are also 2 other breweries extremely close that make awesome beers.

Idle hands which is literally right next door to nightshift makes amazing Belgian inspried beers. I don't think I've ever seen them mentioned here before.

Mystic brewery is another hidden gem in Massachusetts. Their whole philosophy is to return to the styles of brewing of years ago. Mostly saison farmhouse style beers but their Auerbach rauchbier is awesome. Their Vinland series is daring cultivating local yeasts from fruits and using those to brew beers. Great tasting room and really under appreciated in my opinion.

Tallgrass Brewing in Manhattan, KS - cans only and now distributes in 13 (I think) states, so the word is hopefully starting to get around a little bit.

They have an outstanding summer wheat beer (Halcyon), a tasty tripel (Velvet Rooster), a solid pale (8-Bit) and they recently released a really good IPA (Ethos).

While I wouldn't exactly say "unappreciated",Uinta doesn't get a lot of chatter on the site.
With solid 'everyday' beers like HopNotch and Dubhe, along with some outstanding heavy-hitters like Labyrinth and Cockeyed Cooper,I'd certainly say they might be considered UNDERappreciated.
    Love those last two!

Devils Backbone. They've won numerous medals including small brewery of the year but most have never heard of them.

Also WV's own Bridge Brew Works! They aren't necessarily under-appreciated, just haven't had a large enough customer base (only WV distribution).

Sam Adams. Good beer abounds from this brewery. And boy, do they do variety. Any time I come across a style I've never heard of, some of the first examples of the style I find are from Sam Adams. People like to shit on em for being such a big production, but Jim Koch has done more for craft beer awareness than just about anybody. Beers are generally good to great, with some serious gems in the lineup.

I'm going to go with Acoustic Ales out of San Diego. Haven't been hearing much about them on here, but what I've had has been pretty awesome.

I'm going to have to throw Mad River into the mix. Their seasonal 4-packs are all awesome, and the Steelhead series beers are all solid, esp. the stout and the Scotch porter. The Jamaica Red is one of my favorite examples of the style as well.

I still cannot believe that virtually everyone where I live considers “De La Senne” mediocre at best.
I have also no idea why De Dochter van De Korenaar is not as known as Struise is.

Also Oersoep but that is because their beers are at the moment brewed only in very, very small quantities. Each beer seems to between something like 12 – 50 bottles (75 cl.) made. None of their beers are even listed on BA.

Perrin is really just not that good. I love their space but the beer besides Kona is just ehh. I have not found anything on their list that blows me away. I think the issue of why i dont like them so much is the fact that we have so many good breweries here in west michigan.

I also feel the same way about New Holland. The mad hatter is ok for what it is but i would much rather go to white flame or founders for an ipa then go to new holland. I think their biggest issue is they have not released anything that is hard to get. I know that last comment may get some backlash but think about it a second. If Founders had KBS all year long it wouldn't be ranked so high and hard to get for people. There has not been a n.h. beer that i was like "if i am not at my botttle shop at the right time on the right day, i wont get any" You can walk into any decent store here and get almost their whole lineup. The second they put out something real hard to get their popularity will rise.

Agreed, when you put out a beer like bitter valentine you deserve to be on the hype train
