I possibly wouldn't mind going on Thursday, if it weren't for the fact that my brew club puts on our annual World Beer Forum at the same time, so I'm already committed. Not a bad deal though, our event is free, we had 20 beers and 3 meads on tap (and all 3 meads were NHC gold medal winners), free food, some cool raffles for beer stuff (brewing stuff, certificates to breweries, glass ware, etc). The "beer for a year" auctions are usually the best, people don't seem to bid on them for some reason. Last year a guy got 13 growler fills from Dry Dock for 50$.

May plan on volunteering for a local brewery here in Sac. I'm sure most of the brewers want to be out tasting other beers and yet have somebody knowledgeable describing and discussing their beers as well.

Is anyone from the area able to go? I like local events like this.

EVERYONE is welcome and encouraged to go!!! We usually have 2 speakers at the event as well, in the past we have had Vinny, Sam Calgione, Chris White (of White Labs), Gordon Strong, the guy from Maui (can't remember his name) Patrick Rue....the list goes on and on, this will be our 18th year putting this event on. Plus we have an open to anyone home brew competition, the awards given at the event. Nearly ALL of the money earned from donations and the raffled go to charity as well. And obviously other then bidding on auction items, everything is free free FREE! How many things do you find for free during GABF week? It is held at the Marriott, in the rooms downstairs they do the judging at for GABF. If anything, I really encourage everyone to come by and have some free beers, most everything on tap the last 2 years has been REALLY good beer, and not just for homebrew. Sours, Belgians, IPA's, Stouts, Smoked beers, Meads, German styles, everything is represented.

I have some gusher cherry blondes from last summer that are occasionally good and occasionally horrid. If only I knew which ones were which in advance. When they're bad, they're White Moose bad.

We can brew a honey-lager with anise and spruce additions; hook speakers to the carboy and play Listz for 4 weeks for the yeast

GABF is only 2 or 3 weeks later than last year, and they went on sale late June last year. August seems way too late...I'm betting mid-July.

OK, I rescind that. According to this page: http://www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com/volunteering/volunteering-at-gabf/..."Tickets for the 2012 Great American Beer Festival go on sale to the general public on August 2.".

LOVED reading this post! My wife surprised me with a gift today... GABF! She just booked the flight, stay at the Hilton Garden Inn and reserved a rental car! Now I just have to wait for the GABF tickets to go on sale.

I have some gusher oatmeal stouts. They kinda went 2009 abyss and got some good wholesome lactic flavor on them.

As for gnarly combinations, I have a red bean stout, yes red beans. If you drink the beer, odds are you will be sleeping alone that evening.
