Seems like the only two answers to this question would be:

    1. "Brewery X," to which someone else goes "Nah, they're really nothing special." You know, because tastes differ.

    or

    2. "Brewery Y," a little one most people have never heard of and won't ever visit and wouldn't likely take one or a few small voices' word for anyway because tastes differ.

Mystic brewery annoys me because I live down the street from Mystic, CT. Turns out Mystic brewery is no where near Mystic, CT. :grinning:

If you read my OP, neither of your scenarios really apply to my friend scoffing at Highland beer one night saying it was nothing special then going absolutely bonkers with enjoyment when I blindly gave him a Black Mocha Stout a few nights later. I got him interested craft beer via Highland and he has had a ton of it but probably went 2-3 years without drinking it because he wrote it off as "nothing special".

Olvalde Farm & Brewing is very underrated. They make some great beers such as the Aurochs Horn and Brynhilr's Gift. Last I heard, they were a one man operation. Not sure if that's still the case?

saranac is a big one, they're not up on any super highly rated lists, but all their beers are solid. our local brewery, breaker, makes a very solid IPA.

So...know any good sites for a satellite brewpub in Mystic, CT?

I see what you did there.

In all frivolity, I'm sure I could suggest a number of storefronts near the river that aren't of particular use to me, but of which the residents would surely resent the closure. Until you replace it with beer, following which everyone will be happy.

It's more confusing because Cottrell makes Mystic Bridge IPA, which is inspired by (and features a drawing of) the drawbridge in Mystic, CT. Only...Cottrell is located in RI...so basically, any and all beer that I might automatically associate with Mystic, CT is brewed somewhere else in New England. Or so it seems, anyway.

Yep. Came here to say just this. I drink a lot of Schells for this very reason. I can't think of another brewery that put out a tasty barleywine for under $10 a sixer in the past year. Very well executed beers at reasonable prices. No fluff, no hype...just great beer.

De Struise beers are some of my favorite in the world but they are awesome at marketing. At least in the insane beer geek kind of way.

Sometimes I feel like their marketing is almost accidentally. Carlo knows what he is doing but there seems to be no logic to Urbain his madness. These guys have had more plans go into limbo than probably any other brewery in existence. Still they are growing very rapidly & still have plenty room left to grow. Urbain doesn’t really believe in export as being the future.

De Dochter van de Korenaar are very good at marketing, better than Struise I would argue. Their focus is simply the local market & not export. These guys know where they are doing, very noticeable packaging, highly distinct products, these guys are managing to sell an American style IPA in Belgium with constancy, alone that is impressive, good placement in the media etc. they do focus on export but that is secondary for them as opposed to Struise who are not afraid to target exclusively the foreign market.

weyerbacher and troegs....you're probably wondering why troegs?? because everyone goes ape shit for nugget nectar but they have other great offerings like perpetual ipa and hopback amber ale. also the scratch series are fantastic

Not true. Southern Star and Karbach are both quite good, IMHO. When Lone Pint in Magnolia starts canning their beers, it'll be on. Their stuff is terrific.

My vote has to be for New Glarus. Most of the beers they brew, especially the styles that aren't "sexy" to most BA's, are pretty much top tier for the style. Dancing Man, Two Women and Laughing Fox are all under appreciated styles that New Glarus has knocked out of the park.

Weyerbacher, I think they're overshadowed by Troegs and Victory, but make better beer.

Visited their brewpub last week and I was incredibly impressed. All three brews were pretty good and the pub prices were fairly cheap. Wanna go back soon for more.

Love Jim Koch. Whatever anyone thinks of him and his company I believe he did more than anyone for the great beer scene in america .Sam Adams is a great brewery and an epiphany for me and my love of beer.
