    Hey Gang,

So I went and moved to Santa Cruz, and I'm totally loving it, but I'm still looking for a good bottle shop. I've tried a couple of places that were reviewed in the "Places" section and was a little underwhelmed. Walked into The Grog Shop thinking, "with a name like that, this place has to have a good selection," and ended up walking back out empty handed 2 minutes later. So far, it looks like Whole Foods might be where it's at here?

Anyone else in the area have any suggestions for go-to spots? No problem finding a good tap list at many spots in town, and the number of breweries in the area is excellent, just looking for a good place to get bottles to go!

Well, shoppers corner does okay. Nothing out if the ordinary except for a random bottle or two. Aj's market is the best joint! That's my favorite bottle shop.

I think if I remember correctly that "Burger" has a pretty good tap list.

There is two burgers, one on the west side, and one in aptos. I recommend the one in aptos. If you go there, ask for Kiera to serve you. Tell her Bo sent ya .

Verutti Liquors in Ben Lomond has a great selection and prices. Well worth the drive and you can hit up Boulder Creek brewing up the road.

there are 3 verutti's...ben lomond has the friendliest staff...felton and santa cruz are downright not cool. They do have somewhat decent local selection but I refuse to shop there based on the staff being dicks.
    Aj's and whole foods.

adding to the above for completeness

Masood's Mini Market in Ben Lomand (only if you are already on Hwy 9 & in the area)
    41st St Liquor in Capitola

and if you go to any of the Verutti's or Masood's make sure you check bottle dates since they all have a lot of very old product on the shelves

Everyone named all the good spots I know of. The only other place worth mentioning is Bevmo on 41st. Not the greatest selection but they always have the staples in stock.

I'll throw a bone to 41st Ave. Liquors although I haven't been in there very much lately. New Leaf on the west side deserves a mention as well. Whole Foods is decent. Shoppers has a wall of six packs which is kinda nice sometimes.

AJ's beer buyer (maybe he'll chime in here) knows his beer and tries his hardest to get the good and occasional rare stuff. Prices are always competitive too, often times beating WF and places over in the Bay. The trick is to look over by the wine and not the cold case. I should also mention AJ's is right across the highway from SARA which is convenient.

Not really. Their selection has gone to absolute shit. Seems to get worse and worse every time I am in there.

If they were open everyday I probably would. Kind of a scary thought actually.

sometimes you gotta check bottle dates in bevmo too, but I'd rather go there than say 41st. bevmo gets deliveries tuesday and friday. also fyi the selection at whole foods soquel (ave.) is slightly better than whole foods capitola.

Burger doesnt sell bottles to go (or at least they arent licensed to do so)... however you should check BeerMenus.com before rolling in though for a beer there. They are fairly inconsistent with their taps as of recent months. Still a good place nonetheless.

Wasnt referring to bottles to go, was more-so replying to the comment of "burger has a good tap list". I had originally said Ajs and sometimes shoppers corner.

copy that...the original poster was looking for bottle shops, thought you might have inferred that they sold bottles to go. didnt want the poor guy to be disappointed if he showed up trying to walk off with bottles (not that they have anything spectacular bottlewise dont you agree?)

Absolutely! I went to the one on the west side last month, they had a few bottles on the wall. I asked if they were for sale, she said they were "for looks". What is that? Lol... There was a few Eclipse's up top.

That Eclipse is the Gourmet Haus Blend. Volker gave that bottle to Oscar for display...or to taunt us with. You decide
