I think it's less that they're hard to make well and more that they're hard to make period. The lagering process has a hefty requirement for time and space. Union Brewing in Baltimore makes a great Schwarzbier, but they make less of it than their flagship ales because they can makes something like two batches of the latter for every one batch of the former.

I couldn’t find a review for Gudenhoppy Pils on BA but the description on the Fat Head’s website sure reads tasty.

    Cheers!

“Our Head Brewer traveled to Europe on a drinking binge. Not Really. Okay, yeah really. But in a good way. He scoured the Bavarian countryside in search of the perfect pilsner. Researching old world styles of brewing and learning from the masters he created this crisp and refreshing beer with spicy noble hops, sweet crackery malt and a clean finish. Delicate, floral and deliciously drinkable. Prost!

ALCOHOL CONTENT: 5.3% ABV BEGINNING GRAVITY: 12.5 Plato ENDING GRAVITY: 2.5 Plato IBU: 44 COLOR: Straw YEAST: German 3470 HOPS: German Tradition, German Tettnang, Czech Saaz MALT: 100% German Pilsner Malz

Edit: I found the reviews: 87 a very good score!

Always good to give lagers more recognition.
For clarification though, pilsners are part of the lager kingdom of beer. Referring to pilsners and lagers is like saying porters and ales.

totally understood, a pilsner is a type of lager beer where there are many styles or lager beers out there.

Came here to say just that. My favorite American-made pilsners are Scrimshaw and The Crisp.

Santa Fe's Freestyle Pils is decent as well.

Ninkasi Sterling Pils has been doing it for me lately. Those cats really know how to massage a grain profile.

Or those of us who do not regard porters to be ales anyway

Urban Chestnut Zwickel. Find it, buy it, drink it. Wonderful summer brew (or any time of year if you're a lager lover like myself).

Have you been to St. Louis, or can you get this in R.I? I've heard nothing but great things about the brewery and really want to try their beers.

Love Santa Fe Brewing Co, used to live in Santa Fe, in Phoenix, I think they are available around here, I will give that one a try, don't recall it from my Santa Fe days. The Southampton beer sounds really great, definitely not available in Arizona though I may be in NYC later this summer.

Jesse, I have had Urban Chestnut Zwickel several times and it is indeed an excellent Kellerbier. I have had the opportunity to talk to the brewer, Florian Kuplent, a number of times and he is a really nice guy and a very talented brewer. At the recent NHC in Philly I also had a chance to meet and speak to his wife and father in law; all great folks.

    Cheers!

I was fortunate enough to arrange a trade with a true BA (FTowne). He hooked me up with two half liter bottles. My kind of brew for sure.

I must confess that I haven't really thought about it until you mentioned it but, yeah, Florian is a great name.

    Cheers!
