I've been hitting the Shandy/Radlers quite a bit lately. I just entered a review of a local one, and there's no listing. I didn't want to put it under "Fruit Beers" (which kind of a strange, bastard category, IMHO) because it was made with lemonade, not actual lemons. I ended up putting it under American Pale Lager. Can we have a Shandy/Radler style category please?

But some of them, particularly the British, are made with pop, not actual lemonade. They're long standing British and German styles, they don't deserve to lumped into a catch-all like "fruit-vegetable" beers.

Well, I mean, it's not really a style, per se, is it? It's more of a mixture/blend of one style with either an actual fruit drink or some other flavored liquid. If anything, fruit/vegetable beer is a touch inappropriate, as the "fruit" is added after the brewing process is complete; but, then, you could say "pale lager" or whatever is a bit lacking, as it ignores the "fruit" addition, at least as far as the style name itself goes.

I'd say fruit/vegetable is the best choice, as that "fruit" is the prime player, flavor-wise. Regardless, no new style needs to be added, really, 'cause, as I said above, it's not a style, more of a tradition of blending...

I think it's because they start with a "base" beer and add to it, unlike Lambic that uses the fruit right in the brewing process.

Well, if having any kind of fruit or veggie in the beer makes a "fruit" beer, shouldn't every pumpkin beer be listed there? I guess what I don't get is how adding something to a base beer, changes the the style of that base beer. For example, if I brewed a big, Bourbon bbl-aged stout, but added some cherries during the barreling, how does it change the beer from a stout to a fruit beer?

Pumpkin beer is a style because they have been brewed for hundreds of years here in the states and pumpkins are included in the brewing process.
Blending a fruit-type ingrediant after the completion of a beer puts loosely in the fruit category.

I am baffled why the op would label any thing close to the Radler, a lager. I am drinking one right now, and it's a slightly less sweet version of Toronja Jarritos, or Squirt. But it's been fermented longer so kids can't buy it, and adults think it's wonderful. The Radler is an alcopop. Wiki states these drinks fall under a lot of initials, such as... FAB (flavored alcoholic beverage), FMB (flavored malt beverage),[3] PPS (pre-packaged spirit or premium packaged spirits), and RTD (Ready To Drink - Aus & NZ). The alcoholic beverage industry does not use the term "alcopop."
Honestly. It's a Fruit Beer or more appropriately, Alcopop.

Historically these were made at the tap.The bartender would pour your beer, usually a Lager, then add in lemonade, lemon-lime pop, or whatever. I've been making them with a local made Pilsener and Squirt. Does the addition of Squirt suddenly make the Pilsener not a Pilsener? And when the fruit puree is added to a Berliner Weiss, does that make no longer a Berliner Weiss?

They are not really a style of beer. They are no different than pouring a beer in a glass, foating some ice cubes in it, and calling it a new "beer style". They are a beer cocktail, akin to a serving method, like bottle, can, growler, etc.

Right. If I were to drop ice cubes into a Heady Topper, it would still be an IPA, agreed? So why does adding juice or pop to a Pale Lager change that beer to a different style?

It doesn't, but you certainly would not review such a cocktail on BA.

Just asking. Everyone seems to just dump them into the fruit/vegetable style except Untappd.

Because it isn't a style, its a mixed drink. A pretty crumby one at that.
