I've had pours when the keg kicks enough times now to know that this WAS the practice, and isn't any longer--so I definitely appreciate it when it happens. Even better are the places where their idea of a running tab is more like a loose suggestion. (For all the growler scorn Russian River is getting lately I have no problem sending them some props and saying that the first time I purchased a growler there they didn't mark down the beers I ordered, just the growler and the fill. Left a hearty tip, obviously.) But half a growler is much more beer than half a pint. Maybe they should have offered to share it with everyone at the bar, and started a new growler fill?

AND there is the possibility that another keg of the same beer is going on. In general, 20 or more lines out of 30 will not be backed up by the same beer. Even important for someone at a table, where now they have to 'figure out' what they will drink instead...

Really? Very rarely ever get a yeast milkshake from anything but a Key Keg. Store most Hefes upside down and dont have milkshake issues after they get tapped and run through. Have not noticed and big 'milkshake' when sculpin kicks...

What What What? So if you kicked the keg in 4 hours, you would know which beer was which, the second to last pour or the last? What if your pint glass was half full when it kicked?

I was at a growler place in Austin recently, and a couple guys from Ballast Point were there to celebrate the brand launch in Texas. I was getting a 64oz fill of Sea Monster, and the keg kicked about 2/3 of the way through. The owner immediately grabbed a bunch of glasses, poured us all a (free) glass from what was in the growler, and got me a fresh fill instead. Seems to me thats the right way to handle that.

Explain what the problem was, or are you just complaining to complain?

I was not at all complaining. I actually was just interested in the experience of others in this situation. As I said at the beginning, I did not expect them to stop and dump the beer that was in the growler, I was just interested in others people opinion. I know that sometimes this site becomes a contest as to who can be the biggest asshole to the original poster (myself included) this was actually a question I truly thought was interesting.

Yeah, I may have been responding more to others saying things like you were complaining and feeding off of that, more than your replying to your OP, so my bad. I think the reasonable thing for places to do is give you what they filled for free and fill another that you would then pay for. As long as you drink the partially filled growler within a day or so it should have enough carbonation and taste fine.

All of this talk of foamy explosions when a keg kicks strange. Are FOB's not the industry standard at this point? I've changed literally thousands of kegs in my life and had zero foam from the switch, I have only worked in bars with FOB's though.

Let me hear this right. Your growler was filled. But, the bartender walked to the other taphandle; which was probably on a keg filled off the same brite tank.
    Your issue is what again?

If you had to actually wait on the fill while kegs were switched out, or it was a tap that was on its way out. Sure, there's an issue. But, seriously?

Never had it happen with a growler fill but have been drinking in bars for 40 yrs and always got the beer free if the keg kicked.

You said you wish they would have dumped out your half filled growler. Why?

In my experience on a Pint Glass its Customary to get your half pint for free. As mentioned this is because either they are Out of that product or need to change the Keg and you will need to wait during that time. In No instance have i ever found that beer to be inferior to what i was expecting to get (perhaps too much head...but for a free beer i can't complain about that if i let it sit for a moment)

In my opinion Ballast Point did nothing wrong. They got rid of any of the extra carbonation by filling it with beer. As mentioned they probably go through at least 1 keg of Sculpin per day so the quality is going to be the same. If you personally had a problem with it then you should have said something.

Have always been given a free beer if the keg kicks before a full fill. Happened in Baltimore this April. I was given an 80% full glass of Noble Rot on the house. I added in half the cost of the beer as extra tip.

    Enjoy

A why question of a wish is hard to answer but I will attempt it. I feel as if a keg is blown the beer will lose its essence of greatness. The growler was still good and whether it was better or worse is so subjective it's not even worth discussing. Obviously if you read the post many feel as I do. Right or wrong it was merely just a question. I know that this site has become a dick sizing event with nearly every post but I will no longer participate in the "who can be the biggest dick" mentality.

There is literally no difference between oxidized beer and well-preserved beer. Show me the science. Otherwise it is imagination.
