Haha I love it when Americans get concerned about things like finings in beer, when we arguably eat the most disgusting food on the planet with gusto. Of course I am talking about live, raw oysters and clams. Having grown up on the shore and treaded for clams I can tell you that you knew when you were into them when the bottom turned into absolute slimy nastiness.

And for the record, finings attach to proteins and settle, that is their purpose, so no one actually drinks them.

The bottom line is that you drank the beer and you are still here. Every kind of mass produced food has something in it that is made from something you might find unsavory or has impurities. I'll never forget hearing about the spider eggs in the bubble gum and the the stuff that winds up in the chocolate bars.

People who are scared of isinglass should probably never drink cask.

Forget about oysters and clams (though not debating the queasiness there!)... what about all the processed, manufactured, chemical-laden food and drink that saturates our markets??

Not that I'm a fan at all of the big brewers and their macro lagers, but shit, some GMO corn and sugar syrups ain't nothing compared to a single "meal" at mcdonalds.

I agree with the strict basis of her "argument" in regards to knowing what's in your food and drink and where it comes from, but other than that... hysterical, uninformed ranting.

Not only that, but she refers to it as a fish bladder. This is somewhat deceiving. It's the fish's swim-bladder. Oh well, research and fact checking is for the birds. Oh yeah, and plenty of craft breweries use isinglass.

The Germans can use PVPP, a plastic, to fine their beers. So a plastic is better than isinglass?

PVPP has been shown to not endup in the finished product, and can be used under the modern RHG.

Speaking of blowing things out of proportion, just because OSHA and/or the EPA hyperventilate over certain chemicals doesn't mean there's anything there for me to worry about.

And I'm not trying to insult you, but---using a fiction series on TV as a reliable source for scientific information? Really? The writers and assorted staff are pretty much just like this blogger as far as accurate information goes.

I believe Stella and some other Euro macro lagers use fish guts for clarity. I know brewdog had a video a year or so back that listed things like this.

That sounds like some grade-A BS emotional manipulation in that commercial. Reminds me of another pet peeve I have: people who enjoy the taste of something until you tell them what's in it. You were eating/drinking it and loving every taste until I told you what I used to make it. Why does just knowing that something (e.g., shark-derived vitamin-D) is in the food ruin it for you? Makes no sense.

I was thinking about just the same thing, that is, what we eat. But I was thinking more about some of the slop that passes as food in restaurants and how you just don't know what the kitchen looks like. Also about buffets and serve yourself types of places where the food is exposed and you have no idea what falls off people's bodies and clothing into the food. If I've ruined your favorite dining experiences, forgive me but this is my opinion. And let's not get started on the additives in processed food. Just try to pronounce all of the words on the ingredients label.
