In the land of IPA's I am curious to what everyones personal favorite local "funky" beer is. Yes I am speaking about Sours and Brett influenced beers.

I'm sure Lost Abby will have the most favoritism, I am just curious to what all is out there.

Not many funky beers from SD. Modern Times has a Brett IPA that is pretty good though.

I tried that for the first time yesterday and thought it was pretty tasty. I think the Brett was pretty withheld but more so changed the malt profile a bit. The hops came through really nice though.

Did anyone else have a carbonation issue with the Modern Times Neverwhere? I thought the flavor behind the beer was delicious, it just felt a little flat to me.

Also had the Karl Strauss Pomegranate Berliner Wiesse at Toronado yesterday and thought it was fantastic.

Best Modern Times beer I've had was Oneida, super delicious. As far as best funk in SD that doesn't rhyme with Rost Rabbey.....probably residing in Kearny Mesa & yet to be released.

I'm a giant fan of Rayon Vert. I'd love to see a fresh batch soon, though. Age hasn't been as kind as I would like.

sours/funky beers is something lacking in SD, though hopefully with Modern Times and Societe that will change. Otherwise, Alpine makes a few, though overall I am not the biggest fan of them. Ballast Point's Sour Wench is decent. I like Rayon Vert. I have not been impressed with any of the sours/brett beers from Karl Strauss, I am interested in trying the Pom Berliner Weiss though.

The last time I opened a Barrel-Aged Token, it was so sour and funky I couldn't drink it.

Probably Rayon Vert, especially for price and availability.

Aside from all the great Lost Abbey stuff and the aforementioned Rayon Vert, Alpine Chez Monieux was pretty nice. If you extended this to all of Southern California, I think you'd get a great showdown between Lost Abbey and The Bruery.

Just came back from a trip to Portland, and holy shit do we have a lot of catching up to do in this area.

Visiting San Diego are next weekend, but my buddies and I were saying how our next trip should really be to Oregon for breweries.

Agreed, I was up there for a week in June and they're killing it with farmhouse and funky styles. Logsdon, Commons, De Garde, and a couple others that are escaping me at the moment have that realm of brewing on lockdown.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the Ballast Point Hout Gueuze, if you can find it.

Helm's Brewing in Kearny mesa has been putting out some awesome Brett farmhouse style beers lately.
