I'm posting this in the SW forum because I'd like to get input on what you guys have traded for that's outside of ATX distro. Here's my experience with smoked beers so far:

Loved: Stone Smoked Porter, JK Salt Lick, Thirsty Planet Franklin BBQ, Alaskan Smoked Porter

Liked: Freetail 4Shadow, Rogue Maple Bacon (I know, I know), Ranger Creek MSP

Didn't Like: JK Gotland, Southern Star Rauchbier

I just picked up a couple of Aecht Shlenkerla's, the Weizen and Doppelbock, and will report back on those. What do you guys think? Anything in particular I should seek out?

One (easy to find) that I would recommend as well is Sam Adams Cinder Bock rauchbock - shit is delicious, especially with a year on it. As far as outside of ATX ditsro, I don't know but I'm with you on the fact that I'd like to find out.

BTW, where did you find the Aecht doppel? I've come across the weizen and urbock, but only those two so far, and I'm very excited to try the rest of their lineup as it comes in.

Sunrise MiniMart on Anderson. Looked like they had a few of each on the shelf.

Edit: Oh, and thanks on the heads up on Cinder Bock. Didn't realize that was smoked.

We get Left Hand Smoke Jumper, which I've always enjoyed, although I dont know when thats available, and Bruery Smoking Wood is certainly worth trying, if you can get it.

I have yet to find a smoked beer I like more than the Franklin BBQ, though.....

Still pretty new to trading...will it take Unicorn tears and blood of virgins to land Smoking Wood?

And yes, the Franklin is awesome. I'm thinking I tend to like smoke with darker malts, but the Salt Lick last night threw a monkey wrench in that theory.

Jack's Abby Smoke & Dagger, should be an easy get - not a specialty brew or one off, also their stuff is very affordable.

I doubt it. Lots of Bruery reserve/hoarders members in Texas, so I'd think you should be able to put something together for it. Its not .rar like that sweet Chocolate Rain......

It's a shelf beer where Bruery distribute, iirc. t's $15+/bottle so it sits around. I saw it on the shelf in CO last month.

I emailed Ben E. Keith to see if they can pass along any info. Based on forum posts, looks like it was around here March of last year. I'll let y'all know if Benny Boy gets back to me. Smoke Jumper is always something I've wanted to try, but I guess I missed it while it was around.

I don't know why we don't get the Maerzen from Schlenkerla here, but that is a must try(their whole lineup is, really). They make the best smoked beers imo from the small sampling I've had.

and god do I love Salt Lick.

I'm definitely an Alt guy, and I think that style would definitely lend itself to smoke. Don't know when I'll make it back to DFW area, but I'll keep an eye out.

I liked Victory Otto; but we get that here in Texas. Not sure on stuff from outside of Texas on rauchbier.

Smoke Jumper fresh is definitely one of the best smoked beers I've had. Ranger Creek Small Batch #2 was also excellent, but has dropped off significantly :-(

I'm a big smoked beer fan and we get a pretty good selection of smoked beers. Especially now that we get the schlenkerla beers. As mentioned the smoking woods are good. I really like rye so I enjoyed both smoking wood versions. The one that I really enjoyed that hasn't been mentioned yet is surly smoke. May as well get some darkness when you trade for smoke. Both are fantastic beers.
