As much as I love beer, I am still fairly new when it comes to the craft beer game, having really gotten into it sometime in the past 3 years or so. When did Heady Topper blow up in popularity? Was it in the wake of the Hurricane where the Alchemist relocated and became only a cannery? I ask this because I read on their site that they have been making Heady Topper since 2003. Was the beer as beloved on tap at the Alchemist as it is right now, in cans?

It was loved by the locals, and those visiting the brewpub. Wasn't on all the time. John swore it would never leave the premises, even though traders would occasionally order a glass, take it into the john, pour it in a bottle and cap it! :astonished: Then Irene hit, and their insurance didn't cover their losses sufficiently, but the cannery was already under way. So they cut their losses, leased the pub out as a taproom, and started making as much Heady as they possibly could for people to take home. Then it got really popular because more people could taste and buy it. Upbeat end to a real tragedy, dontcha think?

Thanks for the history. Exactly what I've read and heard about. I've fortunate enough to have a friend in Waterbury, VT.... Need I say more.
I like the fact that they are still trying to improve Heady... Its great now, but he wants to make improvements there, perhaps by using more local ingredients.
History is the past..... Now, I am ready for Heady in the Future

The December before they opened the cannery they did a 600 bottle run that they released at the pub. Three bottles per person, t-shirts, and pint glasses for sale with free hot dogs. Awesome day!

God, I totally forgot about that release! I do remember it was snowing like a bastard for people trying to get there, though!

I was at that release and yes it was snowing and cold but well worth waiting in line out front. I also remember trying Heady on several occasions prior to that bottle release and I still remember the first time I had it. I had to ask for it by name because it wasn't on the beer selection menu. Great times!!

what is crazy to me is that Heady Topper was only one of many truly memorable beers John was producing back at the brewpub. I remember the lines at the VT brewers fest back in '07 for the Alchemist being ridiculously long, but I still waited...twice. As much as I love Heady, I'm looking forward to John brewing beers other than Heady again.

You know what was awesome, when Heady Topper was on draft at Redbones during NERAX weekend years back.

I echo your sentiments! Last time I was up at the cannery I had a nice chat with one of the brewers where he noted that expanding their offerings is in the works. Including a sour program. Yes effing please!
