Greeting fellow BA's. I will be headed to NYC for a short business trip next month. I'll basically have one afternoon of freetime and would like to pick up some bottles unavailable back in TX and try a few more in the evening.

I will be staying on 44th between 6th and 7th. In looking at the BA location search, Beer Authority looks to be the best bang for my buck for having a draft, but I'm easily open to suggestion. Need help on the bottle shops in the area...would prefer to walk if possible.

    Thank you!

Go to the Pony Bar instead. As far as bottle shops, just hop on the subway down to WF Bowery and New Beer. Beer Table is walkable but prices are insane

Great answer. Ginger Man and Rattle n Hum both walking distance from your hotel as well. Check beermenus.com to see who has the best draft options between the 3 bars, Pony Bar will be the least busy.

I think you should check Beer Authority indeed. It is a great bar. And it won't be as crowded as Pony because Beer Auth. is ginormous.

And as for stores, you can go to Whole Foods Columbus Circle.

And now, guys, can we stop recommending New Beer, WF Bowery, Ginger Man and Rattle N' Hum? Seriously, let's be a little imaginative...

Thanks all. New Beer looks legit per their site. We have Ginger Man and Whole Foods in Houston, so I know those are good bets, too.

I concur on Ginger Man and RnH, but what bottle shops in Manhattan are better than New Beer and WF Bowery? Columbus Circle has some nice stuff, but it doesn't compare.

Check out Cannibal on Park/28. It's a single-bottle shop/bar/butcher/eatery. I've seen many beers in there which I have never seen before.

Agreed, WF Bowery and New Beer really are the best... I think WF Tribeca has a good selection, better than Columbus Circle...

You can get to both Bowery and New Beer by taking the the B,D (from 42nd and 6th) to either Broadway/Lafayette stop or the F to 2nd Ave (all 3 subways are at the same entrance.

I work right in Times Square at 44th and Broadway so you will be right near my office

That place is so overpriced though

Yes, it is. I cannot deny that. I only mention it because they seem to carry some brews that others do not

No...no one come to WF Tribeca. Kindly continue to go to Bowery and Columbus Circle WF. There is nothing to see here downtown

Thank you for the comments. I'm visiting NYC next weekend and am staying around the corner from Cannibal.

The Cannibal is worth a visit just to see what's sitting there, then you can decide if it's worth the coin. I have seen Cantillons and 3F beers in the past; last time I visited they were pretty wiped clean of anything too interesting.

BTW Whole Foods Tribeca is my "home" store, great place, Aaron and Kelly are super cool. At the risk of blowing my spot up, I suppose. Won't name my other one here, already made that mistake once, then someone went and cleaned out all the KH and BCBS. Stupid mistake on my part!

I just stopped by to grab a Aecht Urbock.....$8.00. That is $2.50 more than my local shop in Long Island. You are too right.

Midtown is not the best area for beer in general. Frankly, NYC isn't a good beer town.

One good place is House of Brews on 46th just east of 9th Ave, another is BXL on 43rd between 6th and 7th Aves.

Buying beer is even worse. I would suggest trying to squeeze in a train ride down to Whole Foods on Houston St, probably the best one-stop beer shop south of 86th St. Between the round trip and time in the store you might burn 2 hours, probably less.

    Good Luck, KP.

If you like good fresh Irish beer you should go to Fraunces Tavern, take the 5 train down to Bowling Green, FT is about 2 blocks away. FT has all the Porterhouse (Ireland) beers on tap and they are delicious. Possibly the best beer joint in Manhattan. The 5 is an express so from midtown you'll be there in no time.

Fraunces is where George Washington resigned from the Continental Army, that oughta tell you something.

FT gets overlooked a lot, but it does have a pretty good selection especially compared to other places downtown

BTW: 4 or 5 will get you to Bowling Green express from midtown. Probably about a 15 minute ride from Grand Central

    hi ant,

I used to go to FT all the time to attend presentations on the Rev War, and was always disappointed the bar/restaurant at that time was so bad.

But recently I was researching Porterhouse's beers and saw they took over the FT location and decided to give it a try...and was not disappointed...IMO one of the better beer locations in Manhattan.

    Good Luck, PK.

I like Fraunces Tavern/Porterhouse too, lots of quality taps and a great ambience. But your previous suggestion, House of Brews? That place is straight-up terrible. Pony Bar is one block west, Little Town NYC is right across the street and New York Beer Company and Beer Authority are two or three blocks down from House of Brews. They all are much better options.

I laugh at The Cannibal. Pure **** going on there! $9 dollars for a pint of Avery Out of Bounds Stout anyone? Gimme a break...
