This is @ everyone who seems to think a simple can literally benefits the flavor of a beer. I need evidence!

I've heard people say things like "our whole tasting group preferred drinking from the can vs a glass" and things like that several times. Why??

Personally, I drink from a can because...
    • They look cool
    • I can fit more in the fridge
    • They aren't as noisy and heavy in the trash
BUT, I don't buy into the idea going around that the flavor (especially in IPAs with strong aromas) of beer benefits from being consumed directly out of the can?

Are there just a bunch of people who are already big fans of cans that just need another reason to love them? Did Kimmich's video plant a thought in your head that beer tastes better from a can? Hype? Bias? Or am I actually missing something here?

I don't think they enhance the beer; the beat thing you can say is that it doesn't hurt it.
That said, a can will protect against light striking and they theoretical seal out oxygen better, though in normal storage, the light part doesn't make as big a difference.

I answered before I actually read the question (kind of a recurring thing for me and probably why I didn't get a higher score on the SATs). Your poll question seems a little different than your post. Are you asking if beer from a can tastes better than beer from a bottle or if beer from a can tastes better than beer in a glass?

I voted no. At best, cans make beer taste no different. Most often for me though, they add a slightly metallic taste to the beer.

Cans don't skunk at all, and are less likely to oxidize
    Cans cool faster
Cans are easier to pack in a cooler
Cans are aloud at more places than bottles

Pour it into a glass, and it won't matter. I don't understand why people can't get there heads around such a simple thing?

Coors Light comes in a can and it is the tastiest damn beer ever made, so yes, all beers must benefit from being in a can.

    I voted yes.

The only way drinking FROM the can is going to positively impact flavor is with a beer for which the aroma of the beer is an impediment to the flavor. Knowing how smell/taste tend to work together, the chances of that seem pretty slim to me, but you never know. Maybe there is some fantastic tasting beer out there that has an off-putting smell that would ruin it when poured into a glass.

Now the way in which cans do positively impact the taste is how zero light can reach the beer AND the seal is--from what I understand--more airtight than a cap on a bottle. But that has nothing to do with drinking out of the can.

Better than drinking from proper glassware.

I didn't realize that anyone thought that to begin with. How would removing the sense of smell benefit the taste of something?

As far as whether canning actually creates a benefit...I'd say it's more along the lines of removing a disadvantage. The can won't make the beer taste better, but it will help the quality from degrading due to light exposure.

I absolutely agree.. There was a thread posted a couple days ago that asked what beers taste better straight from the can, and I'm looking for someone who nominated certain beers to explain why or give some evidence backing that up.

For the poll question to be "Does drinking from the can taste better than drinking from proper glassware", I would vote no (contrary to my actual vote which I can't change). Given a choice I would almost never drink from a can or a bottle.

I don't understand the argument against pouring from a can about it releasing all the aroma - that is exactly what you are smelling and I can't imagine it all dissipates while pouring.

I wish I could tweak the title now because the results of the poll would have been different if I specified better. That was my bad and now I'm pissed about it haha.

Personal preference is draft in a glass then bottles. Rarely even consider cans when buying. Double plastic cup with a good draft beats a can. I'd do cans on a float trip or somewhere glass is a problem. Wine isn't packaged in cans - wonder why?

Drinking from a can vs. drinking from glassware...

So, by this logic, you must be throwing away your glassware after each beer.

Being a proper beer enthusiast is getting so expensive. :slight_frown:

My thoughts are all over the place, and you guys are supposed to be able to assume what the hell I'm thinking at all times. Damn, I failed miserably at posting my first thread.

It's all good, I'm just kidding. Don't beat yourself up. Why don't you open a cool one and have it straight from the can? It'll taste amazing.

Cans are better at places you cant bring bottles/glass to, and im pretty sure you (at least I) can drink faster from the can as well.

EX: Founders just started putting all day ipa into cans, did not know this until I stopped there on my way to a camping/canoeing trip, even though I was already more than over stocked with beer for said trip, I had to grab a case of it as your "not supposed" to bring glass on the river with you.
