Alright, I'm going to brew something for this upcoming football season. It needs to be somewhat sessionable since I'll be drinking it all day every Saturday (I'm a college fan). Leaning towards a brown ale, but would be up for other suggestions. What beer style do you think of when you think of college football?

IPA. The answer is always IPA.

Edit: Unless the answer is DIPA.

Why limit it to one type? I brew most of our tailgating beers that we drink throughout the season- in mass quantities of course. I do a Smash Blonde Ale- usually 30+ gallons of it that sees the most action. Then other sessionable beers like a british bitter (also a smash) and an IPA, that I usually turn more reddish and jack up the crystal malts ala SN Celebration, are staples. When it gets colder I often throw a 1.045 porter along with an Octoberfest and an another round of the IPA.

Not sure what type of beer to drink all day Saturday because Sunday's are so much better. But I went to a school with no football program so that has something to do with it.

I like the suggestions of an Oktoberfest Lager or APA/IPA

I'd have to say a Blonde. One for your hand, and one in your lap. Sounds like a NICE way to spend every saturday afternoon, AND at least one of them doesn't have to be the same, week-in, week-out. Check out BCS for suggestions. Just sayin'...

Blondes, bitters, AALs, creme ale, or better yet, classic American cream ale, pilsner, milds, wheats and hefs, "session" anything, and yes, for when the temperature starts to drop, you'll need an Octoberfest for sure (if you're lager ready).

Now also for the cold - something dark (porter, dry stout, oatmeal stout etc) is always nice. APAs and IPAs should also always be handy, of course, but none of these are really what I think of when I think of football beer. Football beer needs to be poundable, and these aren't really my go-to pounding beers.

Winter is time for big stouts, but if you haven't already started those, you might already be too late.

Personally, I'm about ready for the cooler weather, and would love some Octoberfest.

Session IPA's and Blondes are nice and light.

I'm gonna do a bunch a lagers and have them ready to roll. They are pretty light.

I do a light porter, really roasty, almost like a stout that I keep low and it's a good mix for the cooler evenings.

Well heck, if it's gonna be on a saturday, we could just paint our bodies and faces* and get really rowdy drunk and fight over it, knocking down some poor slob's tailgait BBQ pit, causing a big ruckus...

*I'd paint my beer gut too, but alas, I'm pretty skinny, tho I do like to fight, and I'm a fairly big guy

awesome NF...my thought exactly. Unfortunately the current stigma is black beer = strong/filling which is absolute BS. The acid in the dark grains keeps the beer crisp like a sour ale with low pH and the low abv & dry finish leaves you with something not too far akin to a light beer.

Mild gives you the brown that you are looking for and is truly sessionable. And if you like hoppy beers, you can always chuck the BJCP guidelines and brew your mild like Marquis tells us is fair game in the UK -- with as much hops as you like!

Brewing one of these this coming weekend (Along with a not quite sessionable XPA @ 4.5%). They're so good and so easy to drink.

Oktoberfest all the way. The colder it gets outside the better this beer tastes while wearing your team of choice hoodie.

Good choice too.. If you can lager, or make a fake one... Better get on it now though to be ready for football season.
