Agreed in many cases, I do enjoy Surly beers but think many of them are overhyped. Abrasive for example, had this now 4 different times all very fresh. Liked it most and so far only out of cask, last time I had any cans I didn't like it so much I used it to marinate a steak. Now for that it works and is awesome. I do like my Darkness and Pentagram but think they're a bit pricey, however I do enjoy what I get for them in trade (that's all I'ev honestly done with any of them, I think I opened and drank my 4's, and one 5 otherwise the rest just sit there waiting for trades). I will say this though Cacao Bender = magic sauce, I'd pay $20 a bomber for that and feel like I won the lottery.

Note my post from just one month ago:

Agree on both points that one of the best things about Surly is the interest that it draws for out of state trade value and that Cacao Bender is probably (IMHO) the best beer that they have done.

Surly is world class, no doubt. Anyone who says otherwise is just being a contrarian.

To be a contrarian, would not be anybody who says otherwise than world class. Using myself as an example; as "decent" and "world class" are simply different points of the same spectrum of stating something positive about the brewery. If somebody said that Surly sucked balls, that would be somebody more accurately described as a contrarian, but I haven't seen anybody try to make that argument.

I think Surly is great, but I can't say it'd necessarily be my go to if it were readily available to me either.

I would say Surly is a great brewery, not just good or decent. That being said I was just using it as an example since for years people have bent over backwards for their beers at $16/18+ and now that Sevin was $21+ I see it sitting on the shelf many weeks after it's release.

Picked up Woot today at two stores, one was $9.99 and the other was $9.49. Again for EnjoyBy I paid $8.99 and $9.99 so don't be so quick to blame the distributor. Again stores choose their markup.

Funny how you will pay $7.00/$8.00 for a beer on tap but spend time complaining about the price of a bomber that is under $10.

Based on your posts here, I'm assuming your new to MN. Are there any breweries here you've tried that you'd consider above "decent?" No snark, I'm legitimately curious. All Midwest breweries included.

Hate to get off the Surly hate/love/old post/love/hate...but has anyone tried the WootStout yet?
Would like to hear some mini reviews.

I got one coming soon in a beer mail from my nephew (nice kid), and am suddenly interested to try this - knowing I don't have to support Stone's distributor's shipping costs to Minnesota on this one.

I picked one up at Thomas Liquors today for $9.99. Drinking it now and think it's pretty damn tasty. A lot going on - maybe too much? The pecan is prevalent, pretty damn nutty. Dark chocolate bitter. Little spice from the rye. Medium body with a creamy mouth feel  Wheaton? Bourbon is downplayed as you'd imagine given the way they blended it, but it's present and a nice foil to encapsulate the confusing flavor package. Interesting and worth the price of admission IMO. Cheers!

I came back today to ask the same question. I picked mine up at North Loop Wine and Spirits ($9.99) and Surdyk's ($9.49) since I wanted all three bottle designs, cheesy I know. Then again it should cellar well at 13% so three bottles is perfect. I thought it was very good and better than beers I've paid a bit more for. I will say as far as collaboration beers go I liked the Dayman from Stone better but they are different styles. a great stout for sure. I'm exited to try this one again next year and say three years from now. Based on what I've heard from a few stores its going fast so if you want some I'd get out there and grab a bottle.

By the way someone mentioned there is still #EnjoyBy on shelves, where? Might not be "fresh" but I'm sure it's still great.

I thought it was a bit rough and would benefit from some time in the cellar.

Has anyone seen bottles with alternative artwork? It looks like there were supposed to be 3 different bottles.

There seemed to be only 1 of the 2 alternate bottle arts per case.
