I love me some Gulden Draak but I have to say that when I drink it, I know I'm drinking a serious beer. I would never drink it quickly, and am always aware of its potency. Hell, anything with dragon in its name means it's serious. But then again, the same could be said of Duvel (Devil).

Ten Fidy is a wonderful experience, but it is an intense one. There's no mistaking it for a school girl.

Dark Horse Monster 29. The entire time you're drinking it, you argue that it can't be 17%. Crazy smooth!

I have to say Great Divide's Colette Farmhouse Ale at 7.3%. Just tastes so good... Other one I thought of was Dogfish Head's Indian Brown at 7.2%. These aren't the craziest of abv's but definitely high enough for you to forget and have a couple before you remember their well above what a "drink" is.

I saw Duvel going around on this thread and totally agree with that one and Tank 7.

I'm seeing lots of really hoppy beers listed here. While the bitterness does a good job of covering up the alcohol in these beers, I am way more astonished by the way that some of the great Belgian tripels like Duvel and Westmalle etc. can have such a clean/crisp and delicate flavor while still boasting really high abv's. Just my thoughts...

My suspicion is that this is because the ability to hide booze is not really related to the hoppiness of the beer. There are three possible ways to mask the booze--cover up the smell, cover up the taste or serve up a strong distraction. I would argue that yeast and malt are far more responsible for this job than hops. In particular, note that many of the hoppier beers mentioned are also big malt bombs (Ruin10, Enjoy By) that in some ways are comparable to BA stouts and Tripels. Fresh hops distract more from the malt than from alcohol and the malts are what covers up the alcohol in them and in the Belgians. I could be wrong, of course, but one thing I don't see on this list is a lot of ultra dry, thin beers. YMMV

Odd. I've had Younger and Expo side by side more than once, and I get almost no heat from Younger (part of why it's a perfect beer) and only slightly more from Expo. My list would be:

    1. Younger
    2. Consecration
    3. Tripel Van de Garre on tap at Staminee de Garre
    4. Expo
    5. La Chouffe (not double digits but man is that one sneaky)
