My wife's family is from Waterbury, CT and now lives in Woodbury, so we make fairly frequent trips down there, including this weekend. I generally haul some beer from home with me, which confuses my in-laws who favor Bud and Heineken, but I occasionally peruse the local packies in search of something interesting or head out to a bar to watch a game. One of these trips we will make it down to the NEBCO brewery, but probably not this time.

Last time there, at a shop in Woodbury, I stumbled across some Sea Hag and 668, which were pleasant surprises, but wondering if there are any stores or bars in the area (Waterbury, Watertown, Woodbury, Middlebury, Southbury) that are more likely to have a strong craft selection, in particular looking for NEBCO (especially Gandhi-Bot) - I realize that it might not be available anywhere close this weekend, but also asking where to start for future reference.

We also make visits to some of her cousins in Cheshire and at Candlewood Lake, so any hidden gems in those areas are also welcome.

Mountview Plaza W&L in Naugatuck used to have a pretty solid selection. Though, I've heard that it's since gone downhill since its primary "beer guy extraordinaire", Terry, left a while back.

Probably worth checking out, though, as it might still be the best for the immediate area regardless.

Having grown up in Waterbury, CT I feel your pain...

    Few options for you.
Lake Wine and Spirits in Southbury has had Gandhi on more than a few occasions. Nice CT selections Backeast, Two Roads, and others. Small but good selection. The beer guy left about a month ago so not sure if they are keeping up the status.

Ok stuff at Caspers in Heritage Village also. Nice guy trying to supply good beer.

Stew Leonard's Wine will occasionally have Gandhi and ok selection.

International in Middlebury supposedly has a good selection per some friends.

Mountainview is a must go but can be touch and go.

As for Cheshire, a stop in Southington Wines right off the Queen St Exit is a must. Very impressed with selection and quality.

I've had decent luck at a store on Route 6 in Woodbury (on the right as you head North - no clue on the name).

I would second Mountview in Naugatuck. It has gone down a notch recently, but it still is better than anything else I have seen in that immediate area.

Pies and Pints is a good place for beer and it's in Middlebury. They had a pretty good selection when I was in last weekend and the food is fine. Supposedly good pizza for the area, but I did not personally have any.

People are a bit mixed on Shebeen in Wolcott. It's a very new brewery that I enjoyed when I was there. Not blowing minds but very good beers. Worth a visit.

If you want to make it down to Danbury, Stew Leonards has a fine selection on Federal Road. Even further down (by the airport/mall) is Fairgrounds which is also good.

you're really not that far from the source. You could probably even get to NEBCO and back in less than 90 minutes if you drive fast. Surely in less than 2 hours if you take your time. Amity Liquors is practically across the street and theyre one of your best shots at Gandhi in cans if they've just canned a batch.

I know its not that far, but I doubt I will have even 90 min to 2 hours to spare during NEBCO's opening hours this weekend - having a one year old and also playing 45 holes of golf Fri/Sat in my father-in-law's member-guest means I don't really have much leeway for such an excursion. Some other weekend when we can make it a stop on a trip to Pepe's or Modern will be a better bet.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, though - I should at least be able to get to one of the Southbury shops or Pies and Pints, as those are within 10 min of my in-laws.

Hey man, just some other ideas for you. If you are in the Cheshire area check out Cheshire Wine and Spirits. The beer guy is a hardcore old school beer geek who keeps a good selection and has a solid relationship with Nebco and usually has their beer and, when it's available, he has Bot. If you find yourself in Southington I'd suggest checking out World of Wines. It's about a mile away from Southington Wine and has better prices, similar selection and nice employees. I've gotta say though, since you are in Woodbury, if you have the time to take a 25 minute ride down I-84 you have to check out DeCicco's in Brewster, New York. Fantastic bottle selection and they also have an awesome little beer bar inside the store with a good draft selection that rotates regularly. They have HF on tap on occasion. You can buy food from the market and chill out in the bar, there's a few TV's. All the guys I've met who work there are cool too. Highly recommended!

Pies n Pints is your friend. They really stepped thir game up over the last few months. Had NEBCO Weiss Trash on for over a week, and always have a few "rare-ish" beers on. Solid selection overall, and the food is pretty good too.

While I agree with this recomendation, Woodbury to DeCicco's is closer to 45 minutes each way.

Leave it to you man. Yes, it is about 35 miles from the general Woodbury area. Depending on the driver, a person can make it there in 35-45 minutes, if there's traffic then more than 45 minutes. Hope the extra 10-20 minutes isn't a deal breaker for the guy.

Well, I live in Danbury, I know how long it takes to get to DeCicco's and to Woodbury...

Yeah I hear you man. I was off a little. I was thinking of the ride on the highway. It usually takes me about 25-30 minutes once I pass Waterbury to get there. Maybe I drive a little fast in anticipation of where I am going. I used to live in Sandy Hook and it did take me about 10-15 minutes just to get to 84 so I see where it could take a lot longer than 25 minutes. Thanks for correcting me.

All good man. Just didn't want the person to be rushed if he had a finite amount of time, as it seems he does.

He mentioned something about his wife so I naturally clicked into "Wife Beer Defense Time Mode". You see anytime, at least for me, you need to make an out of state beer run you tell her it's only a half hour away and that you'll be in and out. Then when you get there you switch it up. Blam! Oh, if it only worked that easy!

Worldwide wine and spirits in Southington, Wallingford has knuckleheads burger bar, always has sea hag on tap, solid burgers and about 20 taps total.

Premier Wine and Spirits in Southbury right next to Stop And Shop had Gandhi a week ago. Id give them a call and see what they have, they dont really have alot of "beer geeks" that shop there.

Yep. I recently learned about DeCicco's and I do hope to make a trip to Brewster at some point, too. As noted, it probably won't be this weekend, but we do spend a fair amount of time at Candlewood Lake (albeit on the New Milford side) and that place sounds terrific. If they actually get HF on tap from time to time, I will have to make the trek.
