I am pretty sure it is dependent on each respective batch. Some have used bourbon, others whiskey. From what I was able to find last season, most of the batches were whiskey barrels or a combination of whiskey and bourbon barrel if I remember correctly.

Surprised no one mentioned of the BA variants of Brunch Weasel or BBA Peche Mortel.

Brooklyn's Black Chocolate Stout is the primary example (and one of the few) of the former, but I can't think of a domestic US beer labeled "coffee stout" without coffee added --- but I generally don't pay much attention to "flavored" beer.

In my opinion: BCBCS>KBS>Peruvian Morning. Those were the only BA coffee stouts I've tried so far.

There might not be any today. There are still some in Europe.

PS: Re: Young's Double Chocolate==Chocolate Stout made with both chocolate malt and chocolate; of course, BA classifies it as Milk/Sweet Stout

I have yet to try (or even find) BCBCS or KBS, but of the ones I've had, my favorite is Cafe Royale.

Can you provide any historical information regarding the information you are stating, be it a style guideline or reference to these types of stouts? I can honestly say I have never seen any information that indicates their was a previous style or subset of stout specifically labeled as chocolate or coffee stouts that did not involve the ingredient itself.

I will give you the fact the individual beers may be labeled with a suggestion of flavor, such as Brooklyn Black Chocolate or Bells Double Cream, without using the suggested ingredient. In any conversation in this day and age I do not believe it is relevant to include beers into these styles unless they include the specific ingredient. If there is historical precedence I would love to read it, however I feel any historical reference is now outdated and not applicable to a conversation such as this.

Don't have any style guides handy, although almost any of them that offer historical information should mention it. Wiki is not always a reliable source, but it's a start. Also check a couple of other posts people made here. Note also that UK had banned the word "milk" from stout labels during WWII since none of milk stouts had any actual milk in them. Mackeson might have been the original milk stout, although it's hardly representative of the style today. I posted a couple of other links to specific brands earlier and there was some historical information there. Lack of historical information is par for the course here, as some hopheads are not even aware of the origin of IPA, which was exactly the opposite from how it's used for overhopped Amerian IPAs--it was meant to survive extreme temperatures and long travel, something that Heady Topper and its ilk can never boast.

Definitely Peruvian Morning, with BCBCS a close second, and Tyranena's Devil Made Me Do It not far behind (though I believe it's technically a porter).

Have you opened your bottle yet? I preferred it over the tap at the release.
