You've never dealt with English-speaking Russian beer drinkers, have you? Speaking of which, has anyone ever had a real alcoholic Kvass?

    R. Kelly was completely exonerated of any wrongdoing in that case-the girl faked it the whole thing. Now you can sit back, open a Kilt Lifter and openly enjoy "Trapped In the Closet" with your friends. Come out, it is okay now.

Not often, but every time I have (and any Russian was involved), the word "Pivo" has come up. During conversation with one, I was told "kvass" was reserved for, you know, kvass, hence my question.

And, yes, I've had a couple true versions of kvass in my day. It's much better than the soda-like crap sold all over the place around here.

The sour version is almost like a rough Belgian sour ale. The sweet version is more like cheap rum and generic cola. The Russian/Baltic reference to both Porter and Malta is Porter (Porteris in Latvian), but anything stronger than that they don't really know what to make of, so stout becomes Kvass. Pivo is the generic Slavic term for beer, usually lager. There is no separate word for ale. In the Baltics and parts of Scandinavia, it's the opposite--the generic word is Alus, with no differentiation for lager. It's kind of ironic that there is no native expression for Russian Imperial Stout in Russian--they still just call it "strong porter".
