My wife and I will be going to a show in the Assembly Square area Saturday afternoon and staying the night near the mall. We will want some dinner after the show. Redbones is the obvious answer and we'll probably end up there, but does anyone have other, hopefully less crowded, suggestions?

Take the Red Line, bus, or cab to Kendall and go to Cambridge Brewing and/or Lord Hobo. There's also plenty in Union Sq/Inman. Can't name them all, but plenty of good choices.

Assembly Square is not convenient to the Red Line (or anything, really, until they finish the Orange Line station there.) But you could get a quick cab to Kendall Square.

That said, Davis Square is worth the visit for Redbones, and various other less-BA-y options. There is plenty of food in Davis if you can't get a table. Boston Burger Co is choice.

If you want to stick to Davis, try Flatbread. Good beer, excellent pizza, and bowling. Might be busy, but give it a shot.

The Independent in Union sq is easy to get to from there and has a nice draft list.

Most of these have been covered, but if Tasty Beers are the priority then I'd say just pick a Square and go with it:
    • Davis: Redbones, Flatbread
    • Inman: Bukowski's, Lord Hobo
    • Union: The Independent, Olde Magoun's Saloon
    • Kendall: Cambridge Brewing Co, Mead Hall
Can't go wrong - I'm betting you'd be happy with any of the parlays above

Magoun's on Broadway in Somerville has great food, great local feel, and a solid tap list although it can lean more European. Haven't been lately so not sure what's on tap.
Edit: Whoops, didn't see it mentioned above. I wouldn't call it Union though...

Redbones has a solid beer selection but don't go hungry. The food is absolute garbage.
Independant, Tavern at the End of the World or Magouns.

Definitely not IN Union Square - But it's walking distance or a short drive. Although walking down to Inman Sq from the Independent would be even easier I guess.

I'd head to CBC. They just put Arquebus on I believe.

I would disagree with "absolute garbage", but their BBQ is an embarrassment to claim to be known for and callling yourself a BBQ joint. Good beer selections although sometimes too focused on being local rather than good.

Each of the four times I've eaten their, I've recieved a plate mounded with some kind of lukewarm pasty muck with a few bones sticking out of it. Inedible every time.
For me it's a "drink only" establishment.

Enjoy drinking there. I'm not claiming they have the best food known to man or anything, but as I am fond of saying "Your experience may vary". I've had maybe two bad meals in 6 years of going there. Each time I spoke up and got it taken off the bill. It happens.

It is also about halfway between Assembly Sq. and Davis Sq. Great food at Highland Kitchen with good cocktails and a very small, but solid beer list.

Thanks for the input everyone. We're leaning towards the Independent or Highland Kitchen but may just wing it or go where the performers are dining.

Yup. Thanks for the correction. I'll pass it right on to my autocorrect...I frequently feel like pointing out the differences between their and there, your and you're and other annoying little mishaps (and no, I didn't use an oxford fuckin comma and it was intentional), but then I refrain from doing so in an attempt to come off as less of a douche. I have a success rate of close to 50%.
At any rate, either you get lucky or I get unlucky. Or you just can't tell good food from bad. Don't really care which.
Just to be clear, I'm not trying to start some infantile pissing match here over the English language or what is and isn't good BBQ. My intention is not to slam you for not knowing what good BBQ is, I'm slamming a BBQ restaurant for not knowing what good BBQ is. I don't expect you to know... but they should.

If you go to Highland Kitchen go for the goat stew if you like spicy food. Sounds kinda crazy but it's the best thing I've had there.

Davis is just around the corner from HK as well as Magoon's and they're both great spots.

I've heard that stew is fantastic.
