    Sierra to test brew soon
MILLS RIVER PLANT WILL DWARF ALL OTHER WNC BEER OPERATIONS
    11:06 PM, Aug. 7, 2013 |

MILLS RIVER — For a brewery that will employ more than 100 full-time workers and has received a lot of press, the Sierra Nevada project in Henderson County is still something of a mystery.
Only construction workers, employees and a few select guests have been on the brewery site, next to Asheville Regional Airport. But much of the staff has now been hired. Only nine employees transferred from the original Sierra brewery in Chico, Calif.
Rain has delayed some of the construction work, but “we have a lot of systems that are operational now,” brewery manager Brian Grossman said. “There are lot of others we have not yet begun, but they are not mission-critical.”
It won’t be long before test brewing begins. The tentative date is Sept. 5, he said. Production brewing should be going by year’s end. It will be another year before Sierra’s restaurant and tasting room will open, Grossman said.
This brewery will be huge, dwarfing all other beer-making plants in Western North Carolina. Sierra will start by making 350,000 barrels a year year, and eventually that will grow to 750,000 barrels.
Sierra Nevada sells its beers in 50 states and overseas. While plans are not final, European markets will likely be served from Mills River, while the original brewery in Chico will handle Sierra sales in Australia and New Zealand.
The first beers to come out of Mills River may be Sierra’s draft-style pale ale and its original 1979-80 stout recipe, Grossman said. A machine will fill up to 1,000 bottles a minute.

The brewery’s tasting room also promises to offer some treats from a 20-barrel pilot system. In Chico, the tasting room has about 20 taps serving an assortment of specialty beers and cask beer, and Mills River will offer something very similar, Grossman said.

I guess this means the craft bubble is going to burst soon, eh?

I think you misunderstand what that theory is rooted in if you think this article somehow debunks that theory. SN lives outside of the bubble. They are firmly established in 50 states. Their growth has nothing to do with the thousands of craft breweries coming up, out or in their infancy stages. Most will fail. SN will walk through it with like a naked helium haircut without a cap in it's feathered hairdo

Well, when in Asheville I still will order Pisgah, Green Man, or Highland.

I do understand. SN is akin to the 1% who aren't all that effected by an economy that is in recession.
My comment was sarcastic. I should have made that clearer.

The last 12-pack of Torpedo I bought was bad. post hoppy freshness. Returned the 11 remaining and one empty bottle back to the store. I hope this won't happen anymore once the east coast operation opens.

they have dates clearly written on the box; you could have checked before your purchase. Thats not necessarily SN fault at that point its the dist. and the retailer who should be looking out for the consumer. lucky you that you live in a state where you can return alcohol; i dont think thats usually the case...at least the states i have lived in.

I presume you've had one fresh at the brewery for comparison. Correct?

How old was that Torpedo? I've had it around 4 months old before and while not super fresh-tasting, it was still a pretty solid beer. Next time, check the date on the side of the 12 pack. I never spend money on beer (particularly IPA's) without knowing how old it is first. Who knows, maybe it was just a past its prime 12 pack.

Believe me when I say that I check every single beer I buy for a date. any date. This one time I was in a rush and just grabbed it because this store usually is on the ball. BTW, for me, four months old is too old for any hop forward beer. Celebration falls off after a month.

If you really think so, send me all your month old Celebration next season.

Shit, most of the stores around me didn't get sixers and 12 of Celebration until they were already around a month old last year. Stuff was still great.

I think this was the only reply so far in the same spirit as the OP! I'm excited about it too
[although we do already get pretty damn fresh SN beers here most times]

Sounds more like a distributor problem (improper storage) if the beer is falling off in only a month.

It has been my consistent experience over many years that Celebration Ale holds up pretty darn good. I have no issue in buying 3 month old Celebration Ale. I do note some diminishment of hop flavor/aroma at that point but just a small amount.

Celebration Ale is not Pliny the Elder (or Sculpin or Flower Power or ….)

    Cheers!

Exactly my point. My response to send it to me after a month was a reply to the guy who said it fell off after a month. Sometimes when you omit some of the text you are replying to, it makes your reply seem part of the original.

If so, the distributor must be opening the cases and leaving the beer to bask in the sun since that's pretty much the only thing IMO that would make Celebration fall off in a month. Seems like the guy who says it falls off in a month is reading too many IPA falls off in _____ [name your time] posts.
