Oh, and surprised no one, especially you OP, has mentioned Kane. Head High and Overhead are excellent.

Considering the beers he has made and continues to make gotta give a shout out to Jeff O'Neil at Peeksill who has made, and continues to make, some of the hop masterpieces of all times. These include Flower Power, Super Friends, Shotgun Willy, Amazeballs, and Higher Standard (possibly the finest IIPA now being brewed).

I guess HF/ and VT in general can close up shot as well as MN and Surly. There are some great IPA's being brewed everywhere, and they're not within 1000 miles of CA. Hell throw in NY and Fla too, some great brews right there as well. CA isn't the king of top end anymore, they're spread out into just about every region of the country.

    +1 Alpine.

Had 5 of their IPA's so far and their crappiest one beats nearly all other breweries' best one.

Nothing wrong with making the best, that in itself isn't an easy task with so many offerings out there.

And you forgot Hopslam. Two Hearted is my favorite readily available IPA.

Best IPAs would have to be Lagunitas, Bells and my sleeper pick - Shorts. Huma Lupa Licious, The Liberator, Hop Stache, Beard of Zeus, MMMKay have all been wonderful this year.

I was just having a little fun. I personally would not call it the "best" although BA does... but it's a damn fine beer.

OP, locally, look no further than your own avatar. Kane's Head High and Overhead and their variations are the best NJ has, and are comparable to the greats from many of the breweries listed above.

Lots of brewers make one great IPA, but for overall selection, and pure number of good IPAs, I'd go with (in no particular order):

    Stone
    Lagunitas
    DFH
    Russian River

Sierra Nevada and Firestone Walker come to mind, as well.
