Also, the Biergarten at the Viktualienmarkt is not bad. You can pick up an authentic Bavarian snack from one of the numerous stands at the Viktualienmarkt and take it over to the Biergarten.

I stand corrected Ron! Menu indeed said helles! I shall punish myself by drinking both excessively so i remember the difference!

On a side note is the Paulaner Brauhaus at Kapuzinerplatz open again? A month ago when i was there is seemed shut for renovations

Apropos Thomasbräu (the NA beer, not the brewpub). As I recall, every NA beer in Munich is Thomasbräu with a different label on it. Too expensive for the others to make a decent brew, so they all use the same one. Just a FYI from someone who used to enjoy a lot of NA beer.

It's more than 12 months since I was at the Paulaner Brauhaus, so I can't say.

I know it's a little touristy and often crowded (probably thanks to Rick Steves), but I really like the food at Andechser Am Dom.
Augustiner Grossgastatte and Weissesbrauhaus do a good job with traditional Bavarian dishes.
The Glockl Am Dom spot shares seating (and I think the beers, too?) with the Augustiner Am Dom restaurant next door. It certainly looked like the waitstaff were running beers to both. If that's the case, and it might not be, Am Dom has both the helles and Edelstoff along with the dunkel on tap. They had the pils and weiss in bottles. I think they might have had another weiss as well. I'm left to believe the Augustiner weiss isn't that popular as I usually see places that have it serving another one, too.

That may have been the Alkoholfrei offering?

At Am Dom possibly, but I was thinking of in general. It seems like many places that serve Augustiner (and Lowenbrau, too) tend to have an additional vom fass weissbier as well or sometimes even in lieu of their brand. Usually it's either H-P or more often Franziskaner.
I assumed that it had to do with popularity, but there could be another reason, too. I don't think I've ever seen either one of those on tap. That might be a factor.

I was in Munich a month ago on a family trip and we found the food and bier to be excellent as always at Ayinger am Platzl, Der Pschorr, and Andechser am Dom. Usually we also eat at the Weisses Brauhaus and Augustiner Grossgastaette, just didn't on this trip (though nightcap Aventinus & Hopfenweisse did).

Last time I saw Steves at Andechs it was Kloster Andechs -- is there another show in Munich proper?

It's not the show for Am Dom but his travel book. I've seen several US tourists with the book there. Still, it's a great choice so Rick did a good job picking it out. I found the place by accident on our first trip in '05. I just recognized the Andechs sign from BA's top 100.

I've heard him say Andechs is his favorite, but I guess that's no worse than Augustiner being frustrated at Michael Jackson for touting the Großgaststätte so highly and swarming it with beer geeks.
