Omg, if all beer labels were scratch and sniff stickers that revealed to you what the beer should smell like when fresh...Haha...Can you picture all the beer geeks in a store feverishly picking up every single bottle to smell it over and over again. I know I would.

It matters sure, but why not things like OG, FG, IBu, SRM/EBC?

Yeah, but then they would charge you $300 a bottle for it.

Hops used don't mean much unless you know when each variety was used.

freshness is more important to me... thats my biggest beef with breweries. They claim to want their beer drank fresh, but how can people know if its fresh without a bottling date. I know it cost more to add it to their bottling line, but they might lose a potential new customer when someone buys a old bottle. I might get pissed off one day at a brewery because my beer is never fresh and never buy again. That seems way more costly in the long run

This was my exact thought before I ever opened the thread.

But I agree with others about bottled/canned dates. Don't give me this lame best by date. That's an opinion. Packaged on dates are facts. Cold, hard facts.

and since we cant rely on stores and distributors to have fresh beer all the time, how can we prove to a store owner or distrubtor that the beer isnt fresh and it could help the store owner/distributor have a better indicator if its fresh. If you were going to get a new ipa or one youve been waiting to try, ibus are important, but dont you think freshness is far mor important. Most time breweries have specific details like that on their website

Bottling date, and the exact recipe, including mash temps, water chemistry, and fg/og. Okay, I could settle for just the bottling date.

Bottled on date AND best by date
    OG
    IBUs
    Calories
    ABV
    Style
    Hops and Malts used
    Type of yeast
    volume
    brewer location

should all be mandatory. How you can get away with selling a product where you don't list the ingredients and nutritional info is fucking beyond me.

When I said it matters I meant I wanted that along with the things I mentioned, maybe I should have worded it better.

This came up not too long ago, and (IIRC) the FDA won't allow nutritional info on alcohol packaging. Ya know, for the children. Won't someone think of the children?

this would be what i'd look for as well. Most of this info is available on their wesites though. Very Clear bottling date would be the #1 concern
