i don't think anyone wants to be overwhelmed by it, it's just that (from what i've seen, and i include myself in this group) the majority of those who have tried it report coconut flavor ranging from extremely subtle to nonexistent. in a beer that bills itself as a coconut IPA, i think we were just expecting the coconut to be dialed up a bit more.

I hear you. IMO though, if the coconut was dialed up any more than it was, it would become pretty cloying. To me, once it warmed up it was sweet enough. Coconut is kind of a strange ingredient. It seems it can either sit nicely in the background or dominate.

I agree. I finally got around to trying this last night (been on the shelves for several days now), and after reading all of the complaints about the coconut being nonexistent I was surprised by how apparent it actually is. I felt like I was drinking a completely different beer. It's restrained, certainly, but even if you had failed to inform me that coconut was an ingredient I would have easily been able to pick out toasted coconut as part of its flavor profile.

I had the same thought about the malt backbone being more of a toasted coconut backbone. I tried this last night and felt like I had just consumed a completely different beer than what everyone else has had. I thought the coconut flavor, while restrained, was readily apparent.

The coconut R&R was a solid IPA that had a slight presence of toasted coconut in the mix. Still typical of the hoppy & bitter IPAs Stone produces, there is a wave of subtle sweetness that shows up in the swallow and a minute into the dry finish. I can't help but think if they stepped up the coconut presence in aroma and flavor there would be complaints of cloying. I wouldn't be in a hurry to stock a dozen bottles, but I would buy this again.

Solid IPA, only a subtle coconut presence. Worth trying if you already like offerings from Stone.

I keep seeing posts about people not tasting the coconut, but that was not my experience at all. I definitely picked up on the coconut, unfortunately I didn't much like the way it played with the hops.

You make a good point with the warming: I suggest to friends letting Lawson's Double Sunshine warm up to bring out the subtleties

I'm have got to say something here.

Anyone who couldn't smell or taste the coconut has a wrecked palate and should give it a break. Fantastic beer.

    Well balanced, hoppy, delicious.

The fact that this is rated so poorly is a shame and had me doubting my taste buds. But after several evenings of this beer I can confirm, beeradvocate has more people that hate beer than those who love beer.

Did you expect coconut juice? Coconut isn't that bold a flavor. I was impressed they were able to to do what they did. I mean, what meals features coconut as the main attraction?

    Sure seems that way sometimes.

I could definitely taste some coconut, but I noticed it a lot more pronounced in my first glass out of the bomber compared to the second one, and that was further confirmed by my brother who tasted some of the second glass and said he didn't notice much coconut. I thought the beer was only okay, nothing spectacular IMO, but not terrible by any means either. I'd drink it again.

Decent IPA, didnt get any coconut at all, tasted kinda like a slightly modified Enjoy By..maybe that's what they're doing with all the Enjoy By's that don't sell on time...

I had my first beer containing a coconut flavor recently. It wasn't the beer we are talking about but it was there and it was like a whisper. It was something very light and not necessarily sweet like the shredded coconut you use in baking.

I haven't cracked my bottle yet, but I did have a taster of it. Like many said above, I didn't get any coconut, which was disappointing. The beer was alright, but I have to say that I'm not as excited to open my bottle now.

LOL, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Also, my opinion might be swayed slightly by the $5.99 pricetag. Hence my hunting down 3 more last night...
