You know who I think should be punished? The mules. Never let a good deed go unpunished.

It isn't that I don't understand why people are bothered (and I don't agree that this reason is "its illegal" at all), I just question wonder if the punishment fits the crime since as I said above, I don't see it in practice as much different than buying more than you actually want for trading purposes and/or gouging on trading, not to mention eBay sales.

I'd posit that people who want to buy it are just as inconvenienced by people who buy 6 bottles with the intent to trade it all as they are by companies who buy and resell. I'm certainly open to hearing alternate points of view on that.

The only reason this exists is because there is an artificial scarcity for these limited release beers. The breweries should either make more or raise the prices. If either of those things happened there wouldn't be a market for grey beers and places like that wouldn't be buying them. Why aren't people equally mad at the breweries for creating this scarcity?

While what these stores are doing is illegal it may not be immoral or unjust. I tend to think it's not. What good is an unjust law?

Besides if what someone said that their prices are usually higher on other stuff they won't be able to compete anyway. They will be out of business soon enough. A few bottles of DDG or BASS won't be able to make up the difference.

Never underestimate the unpopularity of this line of argumentation on BA. The idea that brewers should actually charge what their beer is worth is just anathema to people.

Funny enough, I've seen the owner of Del Mesa at Alpine "muleing" for his own store.

Somebody should inform Del Mesa that he's not properly cellaring his Speedway.

This has to be the worst argument of all fucking time. Basically what you're saying is that if a brewery does not have the capacity to make tens of thousands of bottles of an difficult to make, expensive, time and space consuming barrel aged beer - they should either:
    A) Not make it all all
    B) Make it, but make it so prohibitively expensive that the neckbearded middle-class beer dorks can't buy it?

Do you really think that if a beer is $75 instead of $30, the demand for it will go down?

The hilariously terrible point you're attempting to make is bad and you should feel bad.

    A) I'm not making that argument
    B) Yes. If they were true fans they would pay the price. That's how nearly everything else is sold in America. I would even argue that's especially true for beer and other non-essential "luxury" goods. That's what I consider premium beers.

You are arguing that someone who is a fan of something should get a discount. If I really like Ferraris then Ferrari should make their cars 30k instead of 100k+ so car fans can afford them and not just rich guys who run hedge funds?

But yes there is a price point at which supply of the product will meet the demand for the product at that price.

I'm not even arguing breweries should sell their beers for market value. They can sell it for whatever price they want. But there shouldn't be a law prohibiting someone from reselling something that they bought fair and square if they think they can make a profit on it.

And if the demand is so high that they can charge double what they are charging maybe they should invest some of that in infrastructure so they can produce more beer the next time around. They could even sell it in advance (even longer term than they do now) or sell memberships to their club like the Bruery does so they can raise capital and reduce risk.

I wouldn't buy them at $75, at least not 6 of them.

    I doubt it.

If you had, and you knew he was muling, why would you not mention something to the folks at Alpine?

We're talking about beer nerds here. Increasing the price of something typically increases it's value, perceived or otherwise. This is exactly what the beer traders are looking for. That's not going to stop anybody.

When did all this anger arise? This community has bitched about Freddy for so damn long, for doing WORSE, and done nothing about it. But Del Mesa posts a pic saying they have BASS/VSS [never saying for sale, mind you] and the ABC is getting called?

I'm not a trader, but I wouldn't buy BASS at $75, and that's coming from someone who maxes out allocations on every Speedway variant.. I'm sure there are people who would still pay $75, but a price increase of that magnitude would very definitely have an impact demand.
