What is even worse is when Cinco de Mayo comes around each year and the liquor stores mark up a 6-pack of Corona to $9.99 (usually around $7.99 to 8.99). What a rip off just because people want to be festive on May 5th. Not sure if Guiness is marked up on St. Patty's day or not. I'm sure it is.

I don't always drink Mexican beer, but when I do, I prefer Bohemia.

Because Cinco de Mayo happens once every year

Just like other non U.S. macro brews, I am going to guess there is good Mexican beer. I just had a Rerd Stripe and it blew Budweiser the f--k away

I'm a sucker for a Mexican beers when at Mexican Restaurant, on a beach or just on a really hot day.

Negro Modelo and Bohemia are probably my faves. Bohemia on a boat or ona hot beach doesn't get much better.

That said, it's clearly more a mental thing.

A lot of people assume Bohemia is just some random Mexican macro lager, but it's actually a pilsner. It's far closer to Carlsberg or maybe even Beck's than Corona or Sol. It isn't the greatest beer in the world, but I think a fair number of the reviews on it are people that are tasting what they're expecting to taste rather than what it actually is.

I agree, but I still drink the hell out of Bud Light when I'm fishing. I probably wouldn't be invited over for a beer at a lot of BA's houses who post on this site. The heresy and all...

Once a year I will buy a bunch of regular modelo some limes and some margarita salt. Rub the salt on the top of the unopened can dip in salt and chase with shots of tequila. Awesome when the mood hits.

Because Negra Modelo isn't half bad, especially compared to whatever else might be an option at the time (like Corona).

I just finished reading the thread on the early release of Sam Adams Octoberfest, and almost every post commented on how beers are seasonal, and how climate affects one's desire to drink certain beers.

I say consider that, as well as culture and environment, when judging beer tastes and choices. I live in Southern California, where we don't really even have seasons, and it's blazing hot well into September/October, and sometimes longer. Some years it's hot nine months out of the year. Really hot.

Many of the craft beers that folks rave about on this site (and probably rightfully so) just don't sound good in that environment, or paired with the foods I typically eat.

I'm all about a couple fresh fish tacos (legitimate ones, mind you, and I would respectfully suggest that we have some of the best Mexican food in the country here) and an ice-cold Pacifico after a long, tough mountain bike ride in the hot, desert climate (even near the beach, as I am) here in So Cal. A little fresh guacomole and salsa and I'm set. No way am I thinking about an IPA, a stout, or really anything heavy with that meal or after that ride. And I've had my share of Coors Light (or Bud Light for that matter) in the heat, but las cervesas Mexicanas are much, much better...

I also get that in colder climes, and where folks eat different food, one may really want those more substantial beers, which I'm sure hold up better to the food and the weather, but they just don't have the appeal to me here. I have to be in the mood for that type of beer. And I'm saying that knowing that I'm quite close to San Diego, which is arguably the IPA capital of the world (which is literally another thread :grinning:). And I love IPAs, don't get me wrong.

Just food (and beer) for thought as we make judgements. I love Mexican beer.

Negra Modelo is just a more expensive version of Michelob Amber Bock.

Any of you should try one of these craft beers from Mexico:
    - Cucapa Barley Wine
    - Cucapa Honey
    - Cucapa La Migra (imperial stout)
    - Cucapa Runaway IPA
    - Bohemia Chocolate Stout (not craft beer but is pretty good)
    - Bohemia Weizen (not craft beer but is a pretty refreshing tasty weizen)
    - Calavera Mexican Imperial Stout
    - Any beer from Cerveceria Insurgentes in Tijuana
    - Minerva Imperial Stout
    - Minerva Imperial Tequila Ale
    - Ramuri Imperial Stout
    - Ramuri Lagrimas Negras (oatmeal stout)
    - Ramuri Batari Chonami

These are some pretty good beers, not as good as the best brewed in the USA but craft beers are on the rise here in Mexico. I could mention more and more but I just wanted to throw some options so you know consider them in case that you come across one of these.

If someone ever want to take a shot at one of these beers but is hard for you to get them just let me know. We could probably arrange a trade. I can get pretty much all of the craft beers from Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada and some of the Minerva's and Ramuri's

More often, you can find Guinness cheap on St. Paddy's day. I don't know if they mark it up in the supermarket, but I'm used to seeing pubs offer cheaper drafts. Or at least pubs that normally have cheap drafts going out of their way to advertise it.

Man, $9.99 for a sixer of Corona is sinful. That's like paying someone to kick you in the taste buds.
