My wife and I travel to Mexico a couple of times a year - and the 2 beers I drink the most often are Dos Equis Amber (often times with fresh lime wedge), and Bohemia Obscura. Dos Equis Amber is a great "beach beer", and the Bohemia Obscura is a darker, rich, bready/malty brew that pairs nicely with nearly any spicy dish. I love and enjoy them often on vacation. And when I come back home, a cool DIPA makes a great way to celebrate my safe return home to my beloved US of A.

The only macro beer I drink any more is Tecate, and that's getting rarer and rarer these days.

Or if I'm in a Mexican restaurant I'll have a Negra Modelo, Dos Equis Amber, or a Bohemia.

You shouldn't. It is more the mexican food that you should be bothered about.

Because you live in Mexico and that's what's readily available. Because you're eating in a Mexican restaurant that doesn't serve quality tequila, you're thirsting for a beverage, and there's a Mexican beer RIGHT AT HAND. Because you like Mexican beer. Because although you don't like Mexican beer, you would like to support the growth of Mexican craft beer. Because you like the way the bottle looks. Because your friends drink it and you feel comfortable drinking what they drink. Because you rarely drink beer and when you do you randomly choose what's available and Mexican beer is on the "import" section of the menu and it seems more exotic than the "domestic" offerings.

I realize this is about mexican beer, but hear me out here. Everyone likes to bitch about Corona, but next time you have the chance compare a corona and a stella side by side, tell me which one you would rather sip. I know, not the same, blah, blah, blah but it will make you seek out corona. Maybe we can start a why do people in Belgium drink stella thread.

Just last week, over a dish of bistec a la diabla, I was lamenting that you couldn't get good beer in most establishments.

The Negra Modelo really wasn't bad, and I'll agree that Bohemia and Dos Equis Ambar are decent, too. But a craft dark lager or even Schwarzbier would've been perfect!

We've all heard of Modello, Tecate, Corona, etc. We also all know that these are not exactly the best quality you can get, the vast majority being light/adjunct lagers. So, aside from the menagerie of substandard lagers that come to mind, are there any really good, top notch Mexican/Hispanic ales and lagers available?

I went with Bohemia over most of the other Mexi beer, but haven't drunk it in a while.

I stay away from all Mexican beers!! Once you get giardia lamblia from drinking water in Mexico, you don't trust anything that involves water from there!! Yes, even beer!! LOL

Shorts Cerveza De Julio was pretty good. If that doesn't count i'll go with Modelo Negro or Noche Buena.
