Just heard on German radio that this year's hops harvest in the Hallertau region of Germany is, due to the extreme weather conditions (first too much rain, and now too hot/dry), the worst in 50 years.

Just when I thought I was well-positioned since I am never looking for "popular" varieties like Citra, etc.,...now it looks like my favorite hops will be getting at the very least more expensive in the near future. Dang.

How do the US versions compare? Is it like US vs UK Goldings which....don't. Obligatory IMHO

Wait, are you asking if I approve of U.S. versions of German brewing components?

LOL No I KNOW what you would say, I'm just asking what US Hallertau is like compare to those from Germany. I have never used them because...well when I want Hallertau I want the real deal. I have tried US Goldings though and thought they were shit compared to UK.

I really like Liberty and will buy more in place of Mittelfrue. I've got plenty of Hersbrucker.
with all the Alt/Kolsch I make I'll need more Spalt or Tett though; not sure if the weather is affecting those too?

You might have some issues with Spalt since I know that Spalt is grown in the Hallertau region. Hopefully there will be plenty of Tettnanger hops from the Tettnang region?

    Cheers!

Spalt is it's own growing region.

Yes, there are also Spalt hops from the Spalt region. The ‘original’ variety is Spalt Spalter. They also grow Spalt Select there as well.

There are also Spalt hops grown in the Hallertau region. You can read more below:

“Because of the poor growing characteristics of Spalt Spalter, Spalt Select, a hop claimed to have similar flavor and aroma but better growing characteristics, was released by the German hop breeding program at Hüll in the 1980s, and is now grown extensively both in Spalt and in the Hallertau. Some Spalt Select hops available to American homebrewers may be labeled simply as "Spalt" or "Spalter".”

Hopefully there will be a bumper Spalt hop crop from the Spalt region to offset potential losses from the Hallertau region Spalt hops.

    Cheers!

Bummer. I've been craving hallertau mittelfruh hops recently and was unable to get them when I placed my last order at Midwest.

Peter, it would appear that Midwest has them now. Maybe you should order them while you can.

NZ Hallertau is like night and day with german. Still a little bit of spice and herbal flavor, but the NZ ones have prominent citrus (Lime NZ Hallertau, Orange NZ Pacifica/Pacific Hallertau) and a bit of dankness (at least Pacific Hallertau/Pacifica does).
